Is the 72 hour bus pass worth it if you are staying near the city center?

Looks like the 72 hour pass does not cover the bus to the airport ... so am wondering if it is still worth it. Is it much more convenient to have the pass than to pay each time you board? Do you have to purchase the ticket or can you use your credit card to pay on the bus?

ETA: the 72 pass covers bus, tram and metro (even though I called it a bus pass, it is a full public transportation pass)
AND even though there is an airport express bus that is not included in the pass, the tram also goes to the airport.

From where I was staying it was not a direct tram but the transfer was easy, from the same bus stop and without much wait.

Prague is the ultimate city for pedestrians. And transit is necessary if your accommodation is in an outlying location. But after visiting Prague several times, I found walking to be the best form of transit. When a lift is needed. ( perhaps 1-2 tram/metro rides per day) it’s the trams and the metro that I found to be most useful for a visit of 3-4 days.
The 24-hour pass may be a good buy at $5. But with tram/metro tickets only costing about $1.50, I don’t think many will find they use the 72-hour pass enough even to cover the nominal $15 cost. Especially if you’re staying in Prague 1.
Credit cards can conveniently be used to buy individual tram, metro and bus tix from machines near boarding locations.
Be sure to visit the Golden Tiger at Husova 17!
Have a great trip.

You apparently have 72 hours or less for your visit (which is fine). That means you wont be doing much more than Old Town and the Castle. The total area of Prague Old Town is 1/2 square mile if you throw in the Castle Area you are still less than 1 square mile; which makes it about the same size as Disney Land (or 1/5th the size of Disney World). You might use a tram or bus to go across to the castle, but thats about it.

Kenko pretty much nailed it but a few extra things to point out. Many people use the 72 hour pass just to have the convenience to use it instead of buying individual tickets even if you are only travelling short distances. The 72 hour pass covers the airport including the 119 Trolleybus to the metro. You cannot use this pass on the Airport Express. If you have the 72 hour pass then that includes large luggage (1 piece). In metro stations you can buy the 72 hour pass but on the bus/tram you can only buy the 24 pass or individual tickets. Use a Visa/Mastercard not Amex or Diners.

We visited Prague for a month. We would purchase the 72 hour transit pass occasionally on the days we wanted to see a lot, but not walk a ton. Sometimes we'd board trams just to see where they would go, get off and explore, then catch another one. It was a great way to learn about and see the city outside of the typical tourist spots.

depending where you are staying you can use the 72 hour pass from the airport. The airport Express bus only goes from the airport to the main train station with a stop near Dejvicka. 59 trolley bus from the airport ends at Nadrazi Velislavin and then connects to the metro system or trams. let us know exactly where you are staying and we can advise on how to get there by public transport. The pass is really handy if you just want to take a tram or metro a few stops or if you want to take it up to the castle area.
You do need a ticket before you get on any mode of transport and validate it on board. Most trams have an orange coloured machine where you can buy tickets using your credit card but buying a ticket at the airport and validating it on your first mode of transport is the best idea as it is just more convenient or use the Litacka app and purchase using that.

from Prague 1 to the airport it looks like other than Regio Jet all other buses will be covered by this pass.

Given earlier posters comments about walking, which is my favorite way to get around especially in new places, I think I may take the bus at most 2x per day which in 3 days comes to 240, saving 90 CZK compared to the 72 hour pass. But is the fun of having an unlimited bus pass worth that 90 CZK? If I didn't use it even 2x/ day would I be bummed at the wasted CZK?

24 hour pass seems like a better option.

Could get it twice and have the fun of unlimited bus bass during those intervals and walk in between :-)

90kz is about $4, surly that is worth the convenience factor, you haven.t said where you are staying as it is quite easy to get to most places in the city by public transport. I am in Prague several times a year ,twice already this year and will be back in a couple of weeks time and use the transport system extensively ,but i don't spend a great deal of time in the city center

In 72 hours of typical first time Prague tourism I can not imagine riding public transportation more than twice, but for $15 to have a card, sure why not. It wouldnt be crazy.

the AE bus cost 100kc each way, so if using that to and from airport 200kc is the cost. for 130kc more with the 72 hour pass you can have unlimited transport for your stay including travelling to and from airport.

I am out walking a lot in the parks and countryside and spend much of my time visiting breweries and micro breweries.i love Letna park, stunning views over the city, Hanavsky pavilion is there, nice place for a meal or a drink, if you have seen photos of the Prague bridges it will have been taken from the view point there. There is a big beer garden there that I often visit to meet friends and enjoy the views.Stramovka park is to the north of the city lovely place , lots of entrance and exit points, the Zoo is to the far north of the park and right across from there is Trojska chateau, nice garden there and a couple of cafe bars open in the warmer months, also a couple of bar restaurants right at the zoo.bus stop there contact to Holesovice train station / metro/ bus /tram interchange that will get you anywhere you want to go in the city. Holesovice area is also at the far east side of Stramovka park, huge exhibition area which is undergoing major reconstruction and refurbishment. There was a big fairground there last month but not sure if that is permanent.one building that has been completed is Pivovar Kolkovna, amazing interior abd serves lovely food and beer made in house, nice outdoor area but it is right opposite the main exhibition hall that is undergoing major works, was a bit noisy when I was there last month.the Planitarium is also nearby. However there was a lot of tram track reconstruction work going on there and trams were being re routed round that area, not sure when the work will be finished but easy enough to walk a few hundred yards to connect to another tram line. All this is in Prague7 so be aware it my affect you.I am not one for museums etc and prefer the outdoor spaces of the city and the pubs away from the tourist areas.

Uncle Gus, I am over 65 and will be going to the airport on June 8 of 2026. I saw your post and thought I would ask the question now. Would the 72 hour pass get me to the airport from the Lesser Town Castle area and where would I buy that pass when I leave next July or would I be better off using a shuttle like Prague Transport? I will be arriving to Prague by train from Cesky Krumlov. I suppose I couubld take a free tram or bus to my accommodation in lesser town at that point.
Thanks for the information.

If you are over 65 you travel free ,no need for any paid pass, just have your passport available to prove you age. I am in Prague at the moment but going to Bratislava tomorrow morning

I left Prague a few days ago and I'm over 65. I stayed city center and only took the tram up to Prague Castle and back. On both trams, there were ticket inspectors.

The inspectors on the first tram just skipped me when they were checking tickets. On the return, I had to say several times I was over 65. He didn't look happy about that but never asked for ID.

I stayed near Namesti Republiki (Republic Square) and found walking to everything in the Old Town very easy.

I used a private transfer from the airport so I can't help with bus information.

Frank I think you got lucky or the ticket inspectors have mellowed a great deal usually they would charge their own grandmothers. I have had to provide my ID (passport) a couple of times on trips to Prague this year, was there last week but never saw an inspector.I get a 50% discount on the CD app train tickets and need to prove my age each time my ticket gets inspected.

Got the 72 hour pass.

I have used it 3 times so far and will probably use it 3-4 more times including for going to the airport tomorrow.
With individual tickets that would come to 210 Kč as opposed to 330 Kč for the pass. So probably 120 Kč worth unused which is USD $6

One would have to use the 72 hour pass 11 times to break even compared to buying individual tickets, but the convenience of the pass is considerable. Not having to think about getting the ticket every time but only which tram to catch and where and spontaneously changing one's mind and walking a little further, seeing something else ... all made simple by having the pass. Presumably you could still do it since the tickets are not for specific buses but for time slots. And I think Kenko mentioned above that there is a way to purchase individual tickets by card but I didn't see anyone doing it, or had any idea where to do it - plus I was not sure about foreign exchange fees so didn't really look into this.

I tend to pinch every penny but I am glad this time I got the pass.

I am in Krakow at the moment for a week bought their 7 day pass for all areas of the city cost 68zloyts about £13. Used it already several times and will get most of the value out of it, but convenience is always worth paying a little more for. No discount for older guys like me unless you are Polish but I really don,t mind that, the tram and bus service here is excellent.

Agree with all the convenience comments. And, I like passes becasue it makes the decision to walk or ride easier. I've already paid, so I can just step on board. Sometimes I'll board a bus just to rest, relax, or get out of the rain. My wife really loves to people watch and we will sometimes take a long bus ride into the suburbs and back just see the local life up close.
