Ideas in Prague in April

Staying at the Hotel Pod Vezi. What is not to be missed? Will be my husband, myself , and our 14 year old son. We added 3 days in Prague before going to Bavaria to visit 2 of our sons.

Thanks!

Sleep in the old town and visit the square, Charles Bridge and after you cross over explore the streets on that side of the river too. You also want to stroll through the old town’s Jewish Quarter and St. Vitus Cathedral in the Castle Quarter.

In addition to Mary Pat’s excellent suggestions I would highly recommend a guided tour with Jason from Living Prague. He offers some informative walking tours that enhanced our experiences in Prague. He is knowledgeable, kind and engaging. Enjoy your time in Prague!

I would also give another recommendation for the Terezin Tour with Pavel Batel. We took a small group tour. It was the best historical tour we’ve ever taken. We were in Prague 6 nights and this was the highlight. A day we will never forget.

About 100 metres from your hotel is a Czech pub/restaurant called Lokal - Bile Kuzelky, go to the basement. If your son likes film special effects then take a look at the Karel Zeman Museum again just 100 metres from your hotel. If you get good weather rent a peddalo from Lavka (opposite side of the Charles Bridge from where you are) and you can go under the Charles Bridge! Got poor weather, take a look at the Illusion Art Museum on the Old Town Square (great for family pics).

Another nod for Lokal. We ate twice at the Old Town location (pre Covid). Very convenient for us. Our hotel was a minute away. Our hotel host recommended the food and the beer. My husband tried a mixture of light & dark beer. On our second visit it was very busy and we ended up joining another patron. Lokal has a special vibe.

I found the Museum of Communism very interesting. I am, however, a confessed Cold War junkie.

I also recommend visiting Vysehrad! The fortress remains are located at the top of the hill so you have great views of the river and the city. There is a small interesting church; I think it's called St. Peter and St. Paul. And a beautiful national cemetery where some famous people are buried. We visited Prague twice and visited Vysehrad both times.

I also recommend the Museum of Communism. It's fascinating. And if you like art, we enjoyed the small Alphonse Mucha museum.

Hi Angela-

And another vote for Vysehrad. Especially if you will be there for 3 days, it's a nice break from the Old Town/New Town area. 10-15 tram ride away, but you're miles away from the other tourists. We took the subway over to the neighborhood, and walked through the park back towards the Old Town. If you leave the park in the late afternoon, as we did, and want to eat nearby, I'll recommend U Semika. On an old cobbled lane (Vratislavova) at the base of the park hill, it had hearty Czech classics in a cozy atmosphere; only locals, that I could see. Tram ride along the river on the return to Old Town. U Semika was a nice place for us to warm up, on a cold April evening . . .

Be prepared for chilly weather. My wife and I also visited in (late) April, 5-6 years ago. We were in Prague for 4 days, Cesky Krumlov for 1.5, and then Vienna. We spend many hours at a time wandering around, following Rick's guided neighborhood walks, when we travel. (We did every one in Prague, to various extents, all recommended.) But we had snow flurries on 2 of 3 days wandering in Prague, and on the full day we had in Cesky Krumlov. Mostly around 40 degrees F. Luckily, we could always find a coffee shop, bakery, pub, or museum every few blocks if we wanted to warm up. (But when we got to Vienna, just a bit to the south, it was magically in the 60's and sunny every day.) I think Prague was unseasonably cold the days we visited, but be prepared.

In addition to the advice you received already, other, lesser sites, in Prague that we enjoyed were the Strahov Library in the monastery 1/4 mile above the castle complex, the Mucha Museum, and the Jerusalem Synagogue (about 3 blocks from the Mucha), which has some interesting architecture. All worth the 0.75-1.5 hrs. we spent at each. (I think) all 3 are mentioned in Rick's guidebook, so you can see if they are to your tastes. And we really enjoyed finding excuses to jump on a tram--it was a great, easy way to see the city!

One more restaurant recommendation, closer to your hotel, right along the river: Hergetova Cihelna. Great views of the river, the Charles Bridge from a different perspective, and the Old Town. Google Maps has it "temporarily closed" currently. Might be worth checking when you arrive in town.

Enjoy!

Angela-
I will add to bkarhoff’s recommendation for Hergetova Cihelna restaurant. As reported they are temporarily closed. That said, they do have a sister restaurant if you are interested. Have to say Hergetova was our favorite restaurant. http://cihelna.com/en/
