How much cash should we take from the ATM?

We are arriving on the train to Prague, staying for 3 days, then flying home (last leg of a trip). How much should we withdraw from an ATM for this time? We will plan on doing the tourist things, like moderately priced meals with a nice meal one night and no souvenirs/shopping. Will take public transportation but always like a little walking around money to splurge with. Hotel is already paid for. Ideally we would like to withdraw once or twice and spend the last Crown as we step onto the plane home...

Thanks for any advice.

That is almost an impossible question to answer. For some it could be 200 for others maybe 400. It all depends on what you do and how you do it. Start with 200 and judge from there.

Since you mentioned that you want to withdraw money once or twice, I would recommend withdrawing what you think you would need for two days. Then you can make an adjustment either lower or higher for your third day ATM withdrawal since you know your own personal preferences for meals and what encompasses a "splurge". You can always check restaurant menus on-line to get an idea of what you would order & spend for a meal.

I haven't been to Prague, so I can't be too specific. However, when I am leaving a country that is not on the euro, I do try to spend down my cash so as not to have much left over. Then, I look around the airport for last minute small gifts or treats I can buy with the remainder. For example, one time leaving Zagreb, I got a small bottle of a local liqueur (less than 3 ounces) and lots of chocolate in an airport shop. I think I got down to 5 kuna, less than $1.

Take out an amount with a 500 in it. I pulled 4000 out and got two 2000 koruna notes (eq to $80 bills) then had to go back in and get 500 so I could get a 500 koruna note ($20) so I could buy a couple of cups of coffee.
25 koruna got me a 1/2 liter of excellent Czech beer. 600 koruna got us a nice lunch for 3. Ended up having to cash the extra koruna back into euros at rip-off rates. Now this was Pilsen, so Prague prices are probably double those. Still you don't need a giant amount of walking around cash.

1500kc per person per day will let you live pretty well, that will allow all that you want. you could take a bit less than that per person and pay for your fancier meals by credit card.
the idea of taking a odd amount out of the ATM is a good one, I was once left with 3 X 2000kc notes a very little else.

The good thing about Prague is that it is cheap to vacation in! Food, drinks, taxis......why not wait till you get there and see prices before trying to determine how much you need.

You said the hotel is paid for. If there are any extras, like cocktails or laundry, you could pay your final bill partly with cash and the remainder by credit card - assuming it's not a B&B or someplace that doesn't take credit cards. You did not say how many people are in your party! Are you going to the opera or anything like that?

Don' forget that you have a maximum allowed, usually quoted in Dollars. (Assuming you are American. Your home town is not visible beside your screen name.) Find out what it is, or re-set it before leaving. Some travelers care more about the bank's per-withdrawal fee than they do about ending up with extra cash or airport rip-off Exchange fees. We took our Korunas home and, years later, gave them to a niece with an Au Pair job coming up. But we've also had currencies replaced before we could give them away! Don't forget charity collection boxes (I mean, legitimate, permanent ones) at airports.

I think Duty-Free is not usually a good deal, but a lot of people develop a shopping frenzy if there is foreign cash in their pocket. But big Duty-Free chains often take multiple currencies, and cheerfully take credit cards. Remember to have the charge done in local currency, not Dollars. We try to buy a local wine or liqueur at a supermarket, and it's always less than at Duty-Free.

Hi,
My wife and I take our maximium withdrawal as needed. About $400 or $450 per ATM visit. It minimizes the charge as a % of the withdrawal. More importantly, split the money up. My wife carries half and I the other half. More than that we keep the money split on our bodies. Sally has a very secure location where she keeps the majority of her money. If we need it she nearly has to undress.

A friend's husband just had 570 Euroes plus his passport plus his credit cards taken in Itlay. What was he doing having ALL those things inone place and in onceplace where it could be picked? And I have to ask, Why was he walking around with 570 Euroes? He says the worst part was that his wife had told him NOT to put it in his cargo pants pocket. He says losing the money isn't as bad as having to listen...

So don't put all your eggs inone basket. And for the majority of it have it in a very secure basket.

You are going to end up with so unused cash. This is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. I will send you a PM with mailing instruction for the unused cash

" Start with 200" ???

Frank, Czech Republic is on the Koruna, not the euro. A Koruna is worth about 5¢, so 200 Koruna is about $10. Food is cheap in the Republic, but not that cheap.

When I was there by myself for "3 days" (2 nights), I spent 24 czk for a metro ticket to get to my accommodations from the Hbf (hl.n.) the first day. The next day I bought an all day pass for everything in Prague for 110 czk.

I took out 3900 czk (about $200) from the ATM when I arrived and left with around 900 czk (about $35). That included 1300 czk cash for my room.

Breakfast was included with my night's lodging. The first night, I had a pretty nice dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner, two Pilners, and tip was 320 czk. The next day I had a nice lunch (more like a dinner) on the Capital Hill for 350 czk (food, beverages, and tip) and a light dinner for 200 czk. So I think, assuming you get breakfast with your room, 550-600 czk per day per person for meals would be about right, maybe a little more if you splurge.

So, is it 3 day's meals plus dinner the day you arrive, or a total of three days with only one full day plus dinner when you arrive and nothing the day you leave (if the hotel includes breakfast). You can add it up.

According to the website for the Airports Express bus from hl.n., the one way adult fare is 60 czk.
