My wife and I are going to Vienna next summer. If we go to Cesky Krumlov, how many nights would you recommend? I find that Rick underestimates the number of days needed to see a sight. We are not blitz tourists.
We spent two nights, and with arriving midday gave us almost two full days, spent just meandering (we also are not "blitz'). We also had this timed so as to attend an opera at the Revolving Theater (at night, outdoors beyond the formal gardens), an utterly charming venue that Rick seems to have never noticed.
We also stayed two nights and while walking around found a small place with music to settle in for the evening. We took the free walking tour around the town and just enjoyed a lovely day.
We stayed only one night, and two would have been better. Such a beautiful, peaceful little place.
We stayed one night while traveling between Prague and Vienna. We saw quite a bit, but I would have preferred 2 nights.
We had one night and wished that we had had two nights,be sure to do the Castle.

I just read Rick's article "The Charms of Cobbled Cesky Krumlov." Just added this town to a future trip to Prague! I think two days would be great.
We stayed 2 nights which was perfect. Had a great tour of the castle; took a boat ride on the river; and just slowly wandered around the city exploring. We loved it!
I'm not a blitz traveler either, but one night wouldn't be so bad. The question is whether you have convenient transportation to extend the visit, such as to the Three T's or C. Budovice (sp..). In high season it can be hard to get tickets to English tours of the CK castle/manor or baroque theater. Our trip was from Prague and the transport may be different from Vienna. This is a very crowded destination.
We also spend 2 nights wandering around town. We used this time as down time after traveling for 2 weeks and before heading to Amsterdam. We purposely did not plan anything before we got there so there was no itinerary we had to keep.
My husband and I were there October 4th and it was so crowded with tourists. We only stayed one night and that was plenty for us. It is beautiful and charming but wat too crowded.
I was just in Cesky Krumlov and enjoyed having 1.5 days (2 nights) to meander the town at a slower pace, especially on a Monday.
I arrived mid-day on a Sunday, in time to sign up for afternoon castle tours, which - in October - still had availability. (That may not be the case in the summer.)
The town and castle were far more crowded with tour groups on Sunday than on Monday, when many of the sights - including the castle interiors (but not the castle grounds) are closed. I was very glad to be there on the less-crowded Monday to relax and stroll around the town, which - as Rick Steves points out in his book - is the main attraction.
