How long should you spend in Prague

Hi all,
This is the first time we're taking our children to Europe (12 and 20, so not little). We chose Prague due to its reputation for a Medieval-Gothic ambiance.

We're wondering how to split our time Czechia. Debating whether to use Prague as a hub and trek out, or if we can squeeze in another location. We love hiking and outdoor stuff, but also want the city experience. We have 5 days, 6 nights. When we travel, we are go-ers!

Thanks,
Laura

Your kids might enjoy a visit to Czesky Krumlov and rafting on the Vltava river that nearly encircles the old town.

Cesky Krumlov is great, but its best as an overnight trip.
Tell me if i understand correctly
Day 1 arrive about mid afternoon in Prague (Night 1)
Day 2 Prague (Night 2)
Day 3 Prague (Night 3)
Day 4 Prague (Night 4)
Day 5 Prague (Night 5)
Day 6 Prague (Night 6)
Day 7 Depart

So if you throw in Cesky Krumlov

Day 1 arrive about mid afternoon in Prague (Night 1)
Day 2 Prague (Night 2)
Day 3 Prague (Night 3)
Day 4 morning to Cesky Krumlov (Night 4)
Day 5 return from Cesky Krumlov late afternoon (Night 5)
Day 6 Prague (Night 6)
Day 7 Depart

This is all a matter of preference and what you enjoy, but I would get bored in Prague before day 5. But if you want more time in Prague maybe a day trip to Karlštejn Castle?

So helpful! The day by day looks correct.

We were debating a day trip to Saxon Switzerland if we don't do Cesky Krumlov.

I appreciate the input that 5 days or a lot in the city. We'll take any additional ideas! Thank you!

If you mean Bohemian Switzerland National Park that borders Germany’s Saxon National Park in the area around Hrensko and the Elbe River check if it’s opening this year. Horrible wildfires burnt vast areas of the park and it was closed to tourism last year. We had to pivot last summer when they closed the area down. There’s some nice hiking around Karlovy Vary.

This depends on how deep you want to go into places. Some people say they have "done" ST Vitus cathedral in 30 mins, others take a lot longer. Most of the other places just require walking around so although there is a lot to see, by just browsing you might think only 2 full days in Prague is enough. But then consider activities. If you are sporty then Prague is the place to be for watersports (surfing, paddleboarding, swimming and cruising), you'll want to hire bikes for sure, you might want to segway a little, there's internal rock climbing places etc. Speaking of rock climbing, if you head in the direction of Bohemian Switzerland on your own i.e. driving, then you aim for the small city of Děčín. There they have something called a Via Ferrata which is a public rock climbing wall (you'll find these in many places in the parks) so if you have your own climbing gear you just go there, otherwise you hire the stuff you need. Check websites for Bohemian Switzerland from April because that's when their season starts. Currently there are still closures on some roads but the major places are still accessible. Likewise, if you plan to go to CK make sure you book some kayaking.

Three days is about right for Prague:

-one day for the Old Town/New Town side of the river.
-one for the Castle side of the river.
-a half day for Vysehrad and the rest of the day for things like the Strahov Monastery.

Explore the city on foot, as the architecture is stunning.

You can spend the rest of the time on day trips.
