Just heard on the radio news that the Czech government has approved a high speed rail project for Czechia. Haven't found any articles in English on line, but it will be interesting to see where the new lines will be.
First they want to speed up the line to Dresden (and Berlin), and afterwards the line to Brno (and probably Vienna). But the first one will take ages, since the existing line to Dresden follows the Elbe river and can't get upgraded and they have to build a new track instead which crosses both the Ore Mountains and the Central Bohemian Uplands, which means several long tunnels. This line will not be finished before 2035.
not see anything about it but will have a search later.
Certainly since I first started visiting the Czech republic in the mid 90's the railways have been greatly improved and it seems anytime I have travelled by train there always seems to be engineering work going on. The main train station in Prague has undergone a massive refurbishment including a complete restoration of the old booking hall and there was still work going on at some of the platforms when I was there last month.
Plzen station is undergoing a complete rebuild and I mean the tracks rather than the buildings ,I was there last month too and it may be a while till that is complete.
The terrain of the country does make it difficult to build faster rail lines and often buses can be much quicker for many journeys, It will be interesting to find out what the plans are, if you get any more info please post.
