Help with Train Tickets from Krakow to Prague

Hi,

I am trying to book a train ticket from Krakow to Prague, May 30, 2024. I want to take the overnight train. I'm looking on https://www.cd.cz/en/default.htm. I see what looks to me as the same train leaving Krakow twice, and I cannot tell the difference between the two options. One appears to include a stop and transfer in Bohumin, and maybe both options do.

22:35 leaving Krakow EN407 Chopin

In the first option it stops in Bohumin at 1:01, and a transfer to IC518 Ostravan. Leaving 3:54, Arriving 7:18.

In the second option, on the first page that shows it, there isn't a stop/transfer in Bohumin, but when I drill down to the details It does show a stop and transfer to EN442, leaving 3:33, and arriving 7:48.

Are these options just showing two different trains from Bohumin to Prague? And if so, am I correct that there isn't a direct overnight from Krakow to Prague?

Thanks.

This is quite common in Europe where trains divide into sections overnight.

There are through cars from Warsaw (where the train starts) and Krakow to Prague. The train EN407 has a very long 2 1/2 hour stop at Bohumin where it waits to attach to train EN442 which has started from a place called Michalovce. Train EN407 also conveys through cars at Munich

During that wait there is a chance to transfer to train IC518 which arrives at Prague at 0718- that has seating cars only and a catering car.

Your cars from (Warsaw) and Krakow get shunted on to train EN442 and the joint train runs on to Prague arriving at 0748. The rest of EN407 meanwhile runs on from Bohumin to Munich.

For a sort of comparison think of Amtrak's Empire Builder which has sections for Portland (OR) and Seattle when it leaves Chicago. That train divides into the two sections at Spokane at a similar ungodly time of the morning where the Portland section changes train number from Train 7 to 27 when westbound.

Or the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago which divides/joins New York and Boston sections at Albany (NY) where the Boston section changes train number.

So you want to choose the 2nd option to book the sleeper from Krakow to Prague- the train which arrives at 0748.

Thanks very much for your replies. I decided to switch to a day train. Shorter trip and keeping it simple.
