Our AAA travel insurance person tells me we need medical insurance coverage of at least $50,000 while visiting the CzechnRepublic. Anyone else heard of this?
yes it is a requirement , whether you will be asked to produce evidence of this is another matter , but you may have to . Check with your own health insurers to see if you are covered.
I am an EU citizen so am automatically covered for reciprocal health care using my EHIC (European Health Insurance card).
If you take ill or have an accident how are you going to pay for any treatment , also think about medical evacuation costs.

knew I had this somewhere, your government's official advice when visiting the Czech republic
Most decent healthcare insurance policies will cover you overseas. You will need to check your policy and/or the insurance company to verify you're covered. In that case, you won't need additional medical insurance to visit the Czech Republic.
Those on Medicare (without a supplement) would need to purchase travel insurance slanted toward supplemental medical coverage. My Medicare Advantage plan will reimburse me for emergency healthcare charges.
When we were in Prague last year, the need for additional healthcare insurance wasn't mentioned by anyone.
Thank you both. Our Medicare supplement will cover us.... Thanks to the link to State.
What do you do if you don't have any health insurance? I don't and was there in May.
you get a big bill if you take ill or have an accident.
I used to buy health insurance from Travel Guard. It is quite expensive. Then I found out that I can buy health insurance for foreigners in the Czech Republic. It cost 900 crowns for one month which is about $38. Much better deal than from Travel Guard. It's also valid in other countries of European Union. I buy it in Vseobecna Zdravotni Pojistovna. It could be translated into English as General Health Insurance Co.
Unclegus,
I realize that I will have a big bill :)
I was just curious if there was any sort of fine.
Ilja,
That is very good to know. I now remember I used Travel Guard, mainly for the travel coverage, not thinking about the health coverage. This is why I love this forum, I learn things that would never occur to me to even ask!
Ilja , that is great information and 900kc for a months cover is a very good deal,I will pass that onto others who ask on other travel forums. As an EU citizen I am not all that up on information for people from outwith the EU.
The Czech Republic is in Schengen and there isn't even passport control at the border (can be, generally isn't) We just arrived two days ago and did not go through any passport control nor did the hotel ask for more than just my passport (they didn't look at my husband's). Most US policies cover people abroad including most Medicare supplements (not basic Medicare part A and B however). The thing you really need is insurance for transport home if badly injured or seriously ill. We have a Medjet Assist policy that covers that; no idea how good it is because we have never used it and hope never to test it.
Re: Medicare supplements, certain plans specifically cover emergency medical expenses outside the U.S. which are NOT covered by Medicare. Covers up to $50,000 (80% after $250 deductible.)
