Has anyone visited the new Mucha Museum in Prague?

Just opened Jan. 2025 I think. Many people complained the old Mucha's museum being too small but this one looks even smaller. I know the original Slav Epic is on loan but anywhere else to see Mucha's works? I heard Central Gallery has some.

Yes, we visited the museum this past summer. It's a very small museum indeed. As we're huge fans of Mucha, it was worth it for us, but it wouldn't be for many people.

Note that the Slav Epic isn't "on loan;" it's on permanent display back in Moravský Krumlov. Time will tell how long "permanent" is.

The "New" Mucha Museum is at Savarin Palace. I should be going there this Wednesday so I will update this thread. The Slav Epic is still in Moravsky Krumlov and will, one day, be at the Savarin Palace....but not yet.

There is a dispute between the Mucha Foundation and the operator of the original museum, as a result the foundation opened the new location. From Wikipedia:

The Mucha Foundation eventually sought to find a new location for the gallery, as the size of the old premises caused crowding issues.[3] Sebastian Pawlowski, director of the Mucha Museum stated that he would not be moving location, and the Savarin Palace location was a separate project.[4] By May 2024, the Mucha Foundation had fully cut ties with Pawlowski, and stated any exhibitions at the Mucha Museum were unauthorized.[5] The Mucha Foundation claimed that they terminated their contract with Pawlowski, who they state owed several million koruna and had kept the paintings in conditions which could have damaged them.

Another way to view Mucha's work in Prague is to take the tour at Municipal House, which includes his murals in the Lord Mayor's Hall.

Visited the "New" Mucha museum at the Savarin Palace in Na Prikope today. Entry was CZK300 so a little cheaper than the Mucha Museum in Panska but it's a work in progress. My opinion? It's a beautiful building and when they eventually combine the Slav Epic with the "new" museum it will win hands down but it's partly a building site and it looks like they have opened just to get some money coming in. Right now though, I prefer the original at Panska 7. The collection sizes are roughly the same. Some unique items in both. But I will continue to recommend people watch the cinema-film in the original location and then walk back through the museum because then you'll have a much better idea what you are looking at. Must admit, I thought the Mucha merch at the new museum shop was better (good excuse to go into the building).

Thank you Jason. That's exactly what I am afraid of. The shop in the new museum is also free to enter without admission?

The shops in both locations are free to enter. In the original one it's inside the door on the left. In the "new" one you go into the building, up the stairs and the shop is at the top of the stairs behind you.

I hope to visit one or both of these next week. If I do, I’ll report back with my thoughts.

Jason, thanks for the comparison between the two. And I’ll see you on Wednesday! :-)

Jason - thank you for the comparison.

Carrie - I look forward to yours.

I will be in Prague late August, early September, and haven’t determined which one to visit.

Additionally, is the Museum of Medieval Art outstanding?

My sister and I were able to visit both museums last week. We liked them both, but slightly preferred the newer one. We liked the pink and the chandeliers. It just looked nicer.

The older one could use a fresh coat of paint.

But, I do recommend seeing them both if you have time. It is a 4-minute walk from one to the other. And they are both so small. So, easy to see both in one day.

I like the Taschen books for an introduction to an artist. Here is the one on Mucha:

Have a great trip!

rimbojimbo, they both currently open at 10 am. 300 CZK for the new one and 350 CZK for the older one.
