Favourite Day Trip

Hey all,

On our last day in Prague we wish to take a day trip somewhere. We are taking the night train to Krakow that evening at 2200, which means there is a limit on how late we can be 'Day Trippers'.. So, what are some can't miss day trips that you suggest when visiting Prague!?

We spent 3 nights in Cesky Krumlov when we visited Prague several years ago. Cesky is a Unesco World Heritage site. It is a small town with a lovely castle, a town square, etc. We found it to be delightful. We took a bus there from Prague and returned on the train. I know many people visit on day-trips from Prague.

While C. Krumlov is a gem it is too far from Prague to enjoy it as a day trip. At least three hours one way. I would go with Rick Steves suggestions for a day trips from Prague. Read about them in his book Prague & the Czech Republic. Trip there takes about one hour or less from Prague by public transport. Medieval silver mining town Kutna Hora. Or one of three castles: Karlstejn, Krivoklat, Konopiste.

It depends on what you want to do on your day trip.

Castles:

  • Konopiste - a castle with lavish interiors and original furnishing, set on a large hunting estate.
  • Krivoklat - A Disney-style medieval castle, perched on a rock above in a tiny village.
  • Karlstejn - Royal castle, close to Prague. A very nice bike ride from Prague on a dedicated bike path, dead flat and following the river. You can cycle there and take the train home, if you don't feel up to cycling back.

Towns:

  • Plzen - small Bohemian town, famous for its Pilsner brewery. The brewery tour is worthwhile.
  • Kutna Hora - medieval mining town famous for its impressive churches
  • Tabor - 15th century city of God, founded by (Hussite) religious radicals. The Hussite museum there is well worth a look

Memorial:

  • Terezin - 18th century fortress used by the Nazis as a transportation and holding camp.

All of the above are easily reached from Prague, either by car or by public transport. You'll notice that Cesky Krumlov does not appear in the list, as it is simply too far away for a day trip.

Yes Ceske Krumlov is a bit far for a day trip especially if you are leaving that evening ,other suggestions are good. I do like Kutna Hora as there is plenty to do there for a day and only an hour or so from Prague.
Karlstejn is also an easy trip but if just doing the castle then it really is only a half day. I will be there next month with a small walking group. Going to visit the castle then do the walk from there to Beroun and get the train back to Prague .
Plzen is great especially if you want to visit the Brewery .Tabor is also a nice place to visit about 90 minutes by train from Prague. You could also do Terezin about an hour from Prague by bus or the village of Lidice that was destroyed after the Heydrich assassination, beautiful memorial there and a very interesting museum, but again it is only really a half day trip, bus from Nadarzi Veleslavin takes about 20 minutes or so.

Hey all,

Looks like Kutna Hora will be our destination. Seems like it has just the right amount of stuff to do for a day trip, and it looks beautiful.

Many thanks!

I agree with Unclegus. Pub U krale Dacickeho (At King Dacicky) (shortened Dacicky) is the pub to eat and drink. About 10 years ago I had wild boar goulash there, it was so excellent I still remember it. Since then I had wild boar goulash few times, not even close. I checked the menu on the link provided by Unclegus and they still have that goulash. I highly recommend it.

IIja ,I first went there about 10 years ago and the wild boar goulash was what i had, they did it with gingerbread dumpling then too but i must admit i don't really care for them,I just like the plain dumplings or the potato ones.
I was in there with friends last October and one of our party had the wild boar goulash, myself I had the duck with all the trimmings and it was superb.
