Daytrip advice from Vienna to Czech Republic

We will be staying in Vienna in January and have time for a couple of daytrips, we are going to Bratislava but were thinking on a 2nd place to go, we are deciding between Brno and Mikulov, I liked Mikulov as it is small and seems charming, good for a daytrip. We are travelling with our 3 year old, so, wondering which is our best option, or which one is better for a daytrip between those 2. Would it be better to go to Brno as it as very important city in Czech Republic?

I appreciate your advice on this :)

Is it Mikulov na Morave you're interested in--not far from the Austrian border? I haven't been there. Although it's closer to Vienna than Brno is, it looks as if the travel time to Mikulov is longer, so take a careful look at the train schedule before deciding. I don't see a departure between 8:10 and 10:39 AM, but I did a quick check on the Deutsche Bahn website; there might be other options on the Austrian or Czech railway websites. It is nice to spend some time in smaller towns rather than concentrating solely on large cities.

I liked Brno for its relatively non-touristy historic center. That part of the city is somewhat hilly, as I recall.

Thank you!! I will check the trains again, when I checked it it seemed that getting to Mikulov was 20 minutes aprox more than Brno, but as it is a smaller town I was thinking that it could be more relax, but if it is not that beautiful or if it is not worth it, I would go to Brno, I haven't been in of them, only in Prague.

We were just in Mikulov in September. It is a nice town, not touristy. It's the center of the Moravian wine industry, and there are wineries to visit. There is a castle to visit right off the main square. I wouldn't call it beautiful, just typical town with few tourist shops. It was only about 2 hour drive from Vienna. Other than that, it was pretty quiet.

If wine doesnt interest you, maybe consider Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO world heritage site. Very pretty town. Not been to Brno, but looks more industrial and busy to me.

2 day trips is maybe 6 or 7 hours of travel for 6 to 12 hours of sight seeing. I suggest one overnight trip with about 5 hours of travel and maybe 20 hours of sightseeing. Look southeast of Vienna.

Hi,

You're right. Brno is an important city. It is the province capital of Moravia. I like Brno, have been there twice in 2016 and 2017 , (interesting, ) but only as a springboard to reach other historical places not that far from Brno. I've yet to explore the city's Zentrum in any degree.

Prior to WW1 Brno known as Brünn then (that German name is still used, ie indicated on big train route map in Wien Hbf and I've had Austrians say it to me as such instead of Brno), where the Tech. University was located.
