We will be in Prague in late September/early October. We won't have have a car. Can anyone suggest day trips by bus or train? Places that are maybe 3 to 4 hours away, so we could leave in the morning and return to our hotel in the evening.
Also, is a day trip feasible to places outside Czechia, such as Berlin or Poland? Or are those overnight trips?

lots of places to visit and the Czech republic has a great public transport system to get you there. Kutna Hora, Karlovy Vary ,Plzen, Ceske Budejovice,Tabor, Ceske Krumlov, Malada Boleslav, Terezin. Lidice,Benesov,Melnik, Teplice,Pardubice,Brno ,Turnov and Dresden in Germany is quite easy to do as day trip.I have been to all these places over many years as well as numerous other places.
It really depends on what your interests are
halvinf, anything can be done if you want to do it. Sometimes to fulfill a great desire you go to great extremes. But if its not that, then ....
I never enjoyed a day trip that took more than 90 minutes of travel each way. Too much travel for too little play time. Remember you still have to get back and forth from the train station at each end and you will still want to arrive a little early for your trains.
I didnt check them all, but I suspect 90 minutes would rule out a lot on the list above. If you really wanted to do Cesky Krumlov, look at the door to door shuttle service. Maybe its easier.
Kutná Hora is probably one of the easier choices for a day trip. Český Krumlov is worth seeing too, but it’s a much longer day from Prague. For Berlin, an overnight would make more sense.
I would agree with MrE about the lenth of journeys,I usually have a max of around 2 hours each way but I am one of theses guys that gets out early and does know the transport system pretty well .You really have to have an idea of the places you want to visit and why. I am a Beer Hunter and look for certain beers,specialist pubs, breweries and micro breweries on my travels,also into football and visit places to watch games especially if my team Dukla Prague are playing.

I have their app on my phone so can easily buy tickets at short notice and never book my return till i definately know when i am going to be leaving
Depends on what you wanna see or do.
Plzen and Ceske Budejovice have the mother ship brewery tours. Plzen was liberated by the US so there are historical markers and monuments. Also, a huge synagoauge from 1893.
Karlovy Vary is great for meandering along the colonnade on a nice Autmun day. As well, a thermal pool experience if interested. KV by bus is the most practical method.
Karlstejn castle is about 40 mins out.. an easy 1/2 day visit Trains every 30mins. Or Krivoklat castle nearby which is in a more natural state and little or no tourists.
Cesky Krumlov warrants an overnight stay if possible.
The only feasable across the border visit would be Dresden Germany..just over 2 hours

There are a couple of farmers markets on SAT. in Prague Smaller marekts during weekdays.
