Czech Republic advice

Hi We are both 72 and active..after completing our RS Paris and the heart of France tour. We are thinking of chilling in Prague for 6 (?) days and taking a train to some local other Czech towns for 3 days then flying home. Any recommendations for this kind of stay and things to see and do. I will consult the RS book but any personal favorites. AND should we plan to take a train from Paris and stop halfway in a town or city before we get to Prague for 3 days. or should we just fly from Paris to Prague? Thanks. Deb and Fred

It is at least an 11 hour train trip with at least 2 train changes. I'd fly Paris to Prague.

Cesky Krumlov is a Czech town south of Prague….we drove there but am sure you could train……it was delightful….don’t miss it! Prague is wonderful….take the WW2 bunker tour….it was so informative.

I second Czesky Krumlov.

What we did was to take a private shuttle from Prague to there. We asked to stop at a couple of castles. Our driver took us to Castle Hluboka (a lovely, fairy-tale castle) and Divci Kamen, a 14th century castle ruin.

The shuttle was owned and operated by our accommodation, so we got discounts for using both. It was Pension Lobo and Lobo Shuttle.

We rented a car when leaving Prague and drove to Cesky Krumlov. My husband did the driving but I remember that it was an easy drive. So you could rent a car if you wish and that would give you more flexibility. Or hire a private driver like BB did. I second BB's suggestion of stopping at Castle Hluboka on the way to CK.

Another interesting town to visit is Karlovy Vary located in the mountains about a 2-hour drive from Prague. This is a spa town with mineral springs. You buy cups and sample spring water while walking around the town. You can book a spa visit, too. Karlovy Vary is very different from CK and Prague.

Definitely fly to Prague. It is an easy airport to navigate.

On our first Prague visit the guide of our walking tour recommended Olomouc as a day trip. It is a two hour train ride east of Prague; I think this area could be interesting for an overnight stay but we opted for the day trip so we could stay settled in one hotel. Olomouc has an interesting historic center; it is covered in the RS Prague and Czech Republic book.

The Questenberk (aka Questenberg) is one of my favourite hotels anywhere, ever. https://www.questenberg.cz/en/

It is up in the castle district, up the hill from Old Town. There is a tram that runs up and down the hill regularly, but we spent 2 1/2 days exploring that area before we even went to Old Town.
