Classical Music

I will be in Czeck Rep for most of May 2018. I'll be starting in Prague but I'm not positive where else.

Would someone recommend good places to hear great works of musical art?

The appropriate answer to your post is nuanced - The previous poster has directed you to a site that lists what are essentially abbreviated programs ( An hour or thereabouts ) of selections designed for tourists . There isn't anything wrong with that , the playing will be decent , and the selections are enjoyable . Venues like the Municipal House ( Obecni Dom ) are exquisite with magnificent acoustics . HOWEVER - the question really is , how advanced are your tastes and musical development ? For instance , one program ( as an example ) lists " Carmina Burana " . This is not a performance of the complete work , but a single brief selection with the accompaniment of a string quintet rather than the complete composition with three vocalists and an 110 piece orchestra and large chorus . The balance of these programs follows a similar suit . If your tastes are more advanced , you need to look more deeply .Given that your locations are unknown , as are your musical tastes and level of sophistication , you need to provide further specifics for more in depth answers .

WOW Steven! What a thorough and well written response. In a world of abbreviations and emogis it's refreshing to see something so well written. I appreciate your taking the time.

I am not a serious musician but I have a great affection for any music which is performed well - I don't care what it is - if it is live it is worth hearing.

If you see something by Mozart at the Estates Theater, do it. It is the same theater that Mozart himself conducted the premier of "Don Giovanni" in 1787.

Glad to help , Some of the programs on the first site will certainly be appealing , look them over . " La Fille Mal Gardee " is delightful , you need not be a balletomane to love it , Choreography by the great English master , Sir Fredrick Ashton , here are two selections - https://youtu.be/oAAodYX3xI8 and this - https://youtu.be/BT9naCq0fdE Enjoy !

St. Vitus cathedral on Castle Hill holds wonderful organ concerts. We were in Prague for a little over a month one summer and enjoyed quite a few of these.

this is a good website to see what is on where and when.
I have been to quite a few concerts and operas in Prague over the years ,
the best has been Don Giovanni in the estates theatre which was wonderful but the worst was a typical tourist offering in the Estates Theatre a selection of excerpts from Mozart operas, a one hour show (exacly 60 minutes) which was a major rip off.
Most places do give some great value for money and the shows I have seen at Municiple house, Rodofinium, national Opera house and St Georges Crypt (By The castle) have all been very good and great value for money.

I am following this conversation...I am planning a trip to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest Dec 2018 and am excited to see some classical music concerts at some of these amazing concert halls. Yes, some of these concerts advertised are just snippets of the real composition or cheesy transcriptions for string quartet. I am finding in my preliminary research that it takes some real looking and planning. Also, given the restrictions of the few days we will be in each city, there will be limitations of offerings. I am guessing we will end up with a combination... legitimate opera or real symphony concert or organ concert and also a smattering of touristy offerings in a very special location. I'll be open minded, too....if I really can't stand the idea of Camina Burana with a string quartet (that would be awful as I have played the real thing) then that would be a good night to see some local folk music! I am just excited to be going and am looking forward to the whole experience!

mscsuze , Stay in touch , next season's programs start to appear by late spring to early summer . Here are three sites to acquaint you with what is available - The Vienna site lists all of the various venues . I have attended the venues in Budapest , they are magnificent ! For more ( and very detailed information ) in Budapest , be sure to look at the Hungary thread for posts authored by James . He has an encyclopedic knowledge that is impossible to duplicate . Vienna - https://www.wien.info/en/music-stage-shows/city-of-music Budapest - http://www.opera.hu/ and https://www.mupa.hu/en/ I assume from your post that you are musician , what is your instrument ? I am a Bassoonist , now retired , and an appreciative member of the audience .
