I seem to recall that RS has a whole section on Krumlov in his Prague and the Czech Republic guide book. Perhaps you should start there?

Oct should be easy to find hotel rooms. i stayed at hotel tiffany, very close to bus station and not expensive. there are vans can take you to salzburg, but might be expensive. if you have time and book train early, you might be able to take bus to prague and then maybe train to salzburg to save some money. The restaurants are very comparable in town - all typical czech food, grilled pork knuckle, goulash, etc. Maybe more choice on the town center side, limited selections on the castle side of the town.
