I did a search and I don't believe this has been covered since the schedule change to the bus from Prague. I see the starting point of bus 413 to Terezín is now Letňany station instead of Holešovice, which makes no difference to me as that is just a few extra stops on the metro line C. However, the latest guidebook lists Holešovice as the starting point, and the Rick Steves website doesn't list any changes on this for the Prague guidebook, so I was just wondering: are there any other changes to process? I'm assuming I still pay the driver as I board the bus? Any other tips for making this journey?
I can’t answer your exact question but found it much easier to book a guided Terezin tour bus from, and back to, Prague. I know that without the English guide, I would have missed a whole lot of understanding all of the places we visited while there.
We made this trip a year ago last summer. The bus was from Letnany. We had a little trouble finding the right platform for the bus but we asked a shop keeper and she set us straight. There are a number of hallways underneath the platforms and we missed the right one. I think you pay the bus driver, but I really don’t remember very well. There was no one else around, so it must have been the driver. It was easy enough to do on your own. The return trip was easy too. I don’t know about any changes in the last year.
I actually went to Terezin recently with Bat-El Tours (led by phenomenal Pavel Batel), and for us it made all the difference. www.batel-jewish-tours.com We had a convenient hotel pick-up, which saved a lot of stress with figuring out buses. It’s good to know the bus change you mentioned, but I’ll add that Terezín isn’t just one site. There are really two main parts — the Large Fortress (the former ghetto) and the Small Fortress (the Gestapo prison) — plus additional locations that we never would have been able to access without (1) a vehicle and (2) someone truly knowledgeable to guide us. For us, the visit was very important, and having an expert explain things and drive us around gave us a much deeper understanding. We ended up booking other tours with the same organization — WWII Prague, Golden Prague, and Jewish Prague. So yes, you can absolutely take the bus on your own, and walk around. But if this is a meaningful visit for you, a specialized tour really helps you experience Terezin more fully.
