We will be leaving Passau, Germany after a bike and boat trip on the Danube. Perhaps a stop or overnight in Cresky Krumlov, then on to Prague. Is CK Worth an overnight stop or just a day stop and on to Prague? ’ve read that it’s very crowded with tours.
I am thinking of spending three or four nights in Prague and then two nights visiting this park area For sightseeing and hiking. Planning to have a car and returning to Munich from this area.
Trying to decide whether to stay in possibly Hrensko on Czech side or Bad Schandau on German side.
I’d appreciate any input, suggestions for sights and hikes
Thanks in advance
Trying to decide whether to stay in possibly Hrensko on Czech side or
Bad Schandau on German side.
Hrensko has slightly more beautiful buildings, and is more beautifully situated, but Bad Schandau is more upscale and more pleasant, since Hrensko still has this ugly flea market, where you can buy everything from cigarettes to garden gnomes. Hrensko offers the more spectacular rock formation (Pravčická brána/Prebischtor), but in general on the German side the network of hiking trails is in much better condition.
My recommendation however would be the village between Bad Schandau and Hrensko: Schmilka. Schmilka is a suburb of Bad Schandau. Cute and quiet, and best of all, at the foothill of the best rock formation of the mountains, the Schrammsteine and Affensteine. But you definitely need a map to hike there (some hotels will provide them).
Having said that: the three main sights of the mountains are the Bastei, Königstein fortress, and Pravčická brána/Prebischtor. The latter can be easily done from Schmilka, but for the two other ones Bad Schandau is a bit more centrally located.
