Best neighborhoods to stay in Prague?

I'll be spending six days in Prague in mid-August. It's my first visit, and I would like to take part in locals/authentic experiences rather just hit tourist destinations. Does anyone who has visited Prague have suggestions for the best neighborhoods to stay in, and explore, in Prague? Thanks!

I always stay in Dejvicka area which is Prague 6. this is the area where the main university campus is based and has numerous great pubs and restaurants as well as beer gardens and great out door spaces. The Zizkov area is a bit more gritty but a popular area to live in as in nearby Vinohrady which has a real eclectic mix of good bars and places to eat, all these areas are an easy tram/metro ride into the main tourist areas

We're in the Letna district - Prague 7 (tho' I believe our flat is technically in Holesovice).

It's a quiet neighborhood and very convenient to a grocery store (Albert) and a tram route. And we are close to Uncle Gus' recommended beer garden, which we plan to visit later today.

Letna is close to Dejvicka, and I do love both areas.
Keri enjoy the beer garden.

We just returned from our first trip to Prague, with a week there. We also stayed in Letna (7), right around the corner from a Billa supermarket and a tram stop. It worked very well for us. On the other hand, the recent trip report on this site that talked about the Novy Sekt neighborhood made me think that might be a place to look for lodging in the future. I'd heard about that area from a couple of other sources and unfortunately we never made it over there. In general, we found dual-language menus in the restaurants (Czech and English) and English-speaking servers. In the grocery store, however, it's another story! I had to throw myself on the mercy of another customer to figure out which bottled water was still and which was sparkling. Now I know that blue caps are still and green caps are sparkling. Guess I hadn't been paying attention! Happy planning!

Janet, We used Google's translate app in the grocery store. If the language has been downloaded while you're on wifi then it doesn't use data. Just select the camera mode and point it at the item's label. It's spooky to see the camera image morph before your eyes! (It also works on a photo you've snapped but the 'live' translation is more impressive!!). We used this to figure out butter (vs some butter-like others), milk (whole vs semi-skimmed), and cereal options. After a while we were better at guessing but the live translation was so entertaining we continued to use it (being sensitive to not be in the way of local shoppers).
