I'm not one who sees the real benefit of staying near the train station - why not stay right in the charming old town section of a city? Having said that, the Prague main station is not far from the Old Town area. These apartments are fantastic and are less than a mile from the train station, right around the corner from the astronomical clock. The one we ended up with was well over 1000 square feet and unbelievably comfortable. Despite the full kitchen, a full breakfast is wheeled right into the apartment each morning and laid out for you. http://www.arcadiaresidence.com

:) - I'm never good on autopilot! But an anatomical clock - that could draw some pretty big crowds:)

If you'd like to stay near the train station, I recommend that you look for an apartment in the Zizkov neighbourhood, which borders the train station.

Zizkov is an old working-class neighbourhood which has benefitted from massive investment in the recent years. It is teeming with small shops, restaurants and cafes and it an area in which lots of young people are choosing to live. It's built on the hill behind the main station and it is brilliantly served with trams, with four high frequency routes connecting it to the Old Town in seven minutes. I recommend that you stay in Zizkov, enjoy a bit of real Prague life outside the tourist centre and take the tram and out of town.

And another benefit of Zizkov: It has the highest number of pubs per square kilometer in C.R. and probably anywhere.

very true, I do like the Zizkov area especially the pubs and you will find transportation easy ,quick and cheap. I am often at the Viktoria Zizkov football games when I am in the city though Dukla is my real Prague team and I vist there often.

Lorraine,
Have you considered using public transport around Prague (trams, metro, etc.)? It really is cheap and easy. There's no reason to box yourself in to any location out of fear of having to drag luggage. The train station is walkable to Old Town.

Lorraine, you don't have to restrict yourself to the train station neighborhood because of luggage. You can take Metro or taxi to Old Town or Mala Strana (another medieval neighborhood) or streetcar to Zizkov. It is a nice walk to the edge of the Old Town from the station - about 15 to 20 minutes but not with suitcases. We took a taxi to Old Town. I think it cost about $5. Metro is quite cheaper.
