My husband & I are planning to fly round trip from Phoenix, AZ to Prague in May. My husband is 6’8” and definitely needs extra leg room & comfort for that long a flight. Does anyone have experience knowing the space & comfortability difference between “premium economy” and “business class?” Also, recommendations on the best airlines to take?
If I were you, I'd choose business class. Most true business class seats are essentially beds. Premium econ seat is a slightly wider econ seat that reclines more and provides more leg room. It may or may not come with a foot rest. However, biz class is a heck lot of expensive. You should have a good discussion with your partner to see what is more important.
Different carriers have different seat types; there isn't a generic PE vs Business configuration. You should also check what type of plane the airline will fly your route - that also impacts the layout. I do agree with Barkinpark's generality - but I have been unpleasantly surprised.
If no one here is experienced with this route and can help, ask your question on the Flyertalk Forums. Often there are frequent travelers who can advise on the "best" airline for a given route and describe seating.
Sad to report that the business class seats we had on British Air this year would not have worked for your husband either. The little cockpit type bed was ok for me as a 5'2" person, but not for a 6'8" person. You might actually do better for a lot less with a bulkhead seat in premium economy. The flight forum mentioned above may help you more.
I would look at bulkhead or exit row seats in premium econmy. I mean, unless money is no issue, then go Business
I recently flew on Lufthansa between Los Angeles and Munich - these flights were on an A380, but it looks like you can book from Phoenix on Lufthansa A350s to Munich [via Chicago or Denver], then connect to Prague. I found the premium economy seat to be quite spacious - I would assume even a bit more legroom if you could score bulkhead seats.
On the way over I was able to upgrade to business class - this supposedly their "old" biz class seats - plenty of legroom sitting up, but rather tight lying down. Their new biz class seats may be better - but price may be exorbitant.
They also offer a few extra legroom economy seats scattered around the plane - look at some seat maps.
I subscribe to the YouTube channel of Jeb Brooks. He has dozens of videos chronicling his travels and they are very professional. His website is https://www.greenergrass.com/videos
He has one video comparing business class on all the airlines and another about ‘the truth about premium economy on every American airline’. Check out his videos for comparisons.
Thanks Carole, that was interesting. For 3x the ticket cost I dont know how much the few extra inches will help a person that is 6'-8" tall. I think I would go for exit row or the bulkhead in Economy or pay for Business Class..
vancouverwa1976, if by chance you are flying into Budapest from Prague, I have a suggestion for your arrival in Budapest.
(I noticed your hotel question in the Hungary forum)
I’m actually flying into Prague then taking trains to Budapest staying at a couple cities along the way. So we’ll be arriving in Budapest by train.
