Have been looking at air prices flying from the states to Prague in August. Surprised at how high they are - over $1,000/pp. Has anyone else tried booking lately?
It’s the world after the Covid lockdowns. People want to travel. Business owners want to recoup lost income.
Supply, demand, higher prices.
A world wide pandemic will do that.
Are you looking to book in August 2023? It's perhaps a little late for the best prices. I doubt you will find anything under $1K. Maybe if you had started looking late last year, you might have.
Add to the demand the fact that airfare in general has been higher than normal all year.
Consider looking at airfare from other airports for better prices. For example, I live in Atlanta, but for a really really cheap fare, I would drive to Charlotte to fly to Europe. Major airports like JFK, Boston and Chicago have a lot of competition between airlines, so you're more likely to find a better price, if you can get yourself there.
Be sure to use Google Flights to search for and monitor flight prices.
Thank you for those that have responded back. I should have mentioned that the cost was per person, one-way! We live in Chattanooga, TN and have checked flying out of Atlanta, Nashville, and Charlotte - no big difference in price. In fact, the cheapest was flying out of our own local airport. Our problem was probably waiting too long to book. Do appreciate your suggestions, though.
One way flights can be very expensive, it is usually a lot cheaper to buy a return ticket or an open jaw.
I see tons of round trips between Atlanta and Prague in August for under $1400. All with only a single connection, and eliminating Istanbul.
I think your problem is you are searching for one way fares. You obviously have to return, so if it is not a round trip, do a multicity search. When I look at flight to Prague and return from Budapest, still tons of flights under $1400.
We are flying to Prague and then flying back from Munich. I don't know why it is so high, but that is what we have seen. Scheduling flights are always frustrating to us.
I just checked Google Flights. I found quite a few options under $1400 for two random dates in August, and Turkish Airlines had a $1088 option. Atlanta-Prague and Munich-Atlanta. You have to choose "Multi-city" from the pull-down box, not One way.
Yes, you have good options with Delta from ATL, changing at AMS and a nonstop back from MUC. Or with Lufthansa, changing at FRA and a nonstop back from MUC. Both around $1400, with Delta a little lower and Lufthansa a little higher.
cajun: Hmm! We too are flying to Prague in late August, with a return late September from Munich (Maybe we'll run into you).
We fly from the west coast. We booked about a month ago, after monitoring flights on Google flights for months.
For 2 of us, flying Delta Comfort +, it was about $4000.
"Everyone" said flights cost more this year, but I looked at how much we paid last year, about the same time frame, flying to Rome and home from Zurich, and with Delta Comfort + and our flights last year were $4300.
We are United Mileage members, but we have found Delta to have the more economical fares. So our recent flights to Seattle, Hawaii (upcoming) and now Europe again, we find ourselves booking on Delta.
Thank you, everyone, who replied to my question. We now know to select "multi-city" instead of one-way. Appreciate all of your helpful comments.
