A month in Prague?

We found a great price on R/T tickets to Prague for month of May 2025, and since it was a bit of an impulsive buy, we thought we’d keep it simple and budget-friendly and stay in Prague the whole month (Airbnb’s are cheaper for a month!). We are used to being slow travelers, often staying a month in a destination. Would like to hear from anyone who has done something similar. We do plan about 5 days in Vienna, and a day trip or two. Thanks.

Your plan sounds great to me. We’ve been to Prague 5 times for 4-5 nights each time and I know I could spend a month there as a base. There are so many layers to Prague and surrounding towns.

We just had two one month stays in Europe this summer and now fall—still in Ireland. Even though we have a house for a month, we’ve taken a 3 night then 5 night trip to explore further in Ireland. In France this summer we spent 3 weeks exploring by train from our base and then went to a different country for the last week before flying home.

Have a great time on your extended stay!

  1. If you get there and Prague speaks to you, you will have an amzaing time.
  2. If you get there and Prague does not speak to you .... well .... always risky making the first visit the long visit.

So have lots of plan B's lined up. Look for day trips and 3 night trips out of Prague. Check and see where the discount airlines go as well as the trains. Research and document all the details then if needed you can escape.

We just spent the month of May 2024 in Prague and loved it. We rented an Airbnb apartment in Zizkov, out of the tourist fray, and used the heck out of public transit. We loved being "slow travelers" and really absorbing as much of the area as we could. We took a few trips out of the city--Berlin, Olomouc, Brno, Nizbor, Plzen.

Hubby is Czech in background (about 4 generations back), and his grandmother still cooked Bohemian food when he was a kid. He loved shopping at the local stores and replicating her recipes.

And while I am not normally a beer drinker, Czech beer is wonderful. I had more beer in 1 month that I have had in the prior 57 years!!

Feel free to ask questions!

Prague is such a magical city! I'm obsessed with all the quirky artwork there—some of it is super breathtaking, while others are more tongue-in-cheek, but they're all so well done. I'd also recommend the Original Beer Spa for a touristy thing, and the Taste of Prague Food Tour was a great way to sample tasty food (and dessert!). They also give you a guide on other things to do, and I discovered a really quaint neighborhood about two miles from the Charles Bridge through them.

For trips, both Kutna Hora and Brno are other Czechian cities that are very unique with some striking attractions (my personal favorite is a "cathedral of bones" in Kutna Hora). Prague is also about four hours from both Berlin and Bratislava, which I would recommend peeking into—it's only 50 minutes from Vienna, too. Hope you have a wonderful time!

Thanks so much, guys. We are really looking forward to getting to know Prague. Carol, we are considering a place in Zizkov, as well (maybe the same one??), but we wondered about the restaurant scene in that area? I know it's famous for lots of pubs, but did you find a variety of restaurants? My husband loves beer, but we enjoy having some different types of food to try. Also, did you find Zizkov convenient enough for seeing the sights? I've heard the public transportation is great, (and free for us +65), but we are trying to decide if we want to be closer to Old Town, so we can walk to sights more easily.

I'd recommend you also consider staying in the Vinohrady area. A bit more convenient to both the Old and New Towns, as well as to the Castle District and Letna Park (Letenská pláň). Make sure to spend some time in that lovely park.

Kathy O,

Forgive my delay in replying--I was traveling!!

There were a few decent restaurants in Zizkov, with lots of great pubs. But with the public transportation so easy, we would simply catch a tram and/or subway to get to one we wanted to try.

Also, we rented an apartment with a full kitchen, so we had many meals at "home."
