30 days in Czech Republic--cash?

My husband and I will be staying for a month with Prague as our home base. We plan to take some day trips out in the country area to research some of his family roots.

Should we carry Czech Koruna with us? Are we better off to use ATMs or currency exchanges?

Once you go outside Prague you'll find currency exchanges are not common. You'll end up using banks for getting foreign exchange so as long as you know the charges connected to your card then use bank ATM's and keep enough cash with you to cover food/fuel as you require if the card stops. Try to get notes not larger than CZK200 if you intend on stopping in small village shops.

I have always used ATMs. Just avoid Euronet brands. When asked, decline the currency conversion on the machine. If you have a good no foreign transaction Debit card, it's easy. I've been using the Charles Schwab checking card for years.

I find I use cash more often in the Czech Republic than other places in Central/Western Europe. You can get away with card a lot. I'll grab about $40-50 USD worth out to have just in case, then replenish as needed.

Hi,
When we go into rural areas anywhere in the world, we try to use the currency of the country. These places are generally small locally owned businesses and cash gives them a boost on their income.

Maybe some people don't realize how small businesses get hit HARD by credit card fees. It can easily be worse than 4% of the charge, A lump sum in some cases that can make a candy bar purchase a losing proposition.

And don't forget to round up. That is how they 'tip'.
