3 days in southern Czech Republic

Need some itinerary advice from Czech travel enthusiasts! This August we will be driving from Poland to Austria (Salzburg area) and have allocated 3 nights for stopovers in Czech Republic along the way to break up the trip. We have previously been to Mikulov and Znojmo several years ago- enjoyed both and didn’t see everything so could easily return but also keen to explore some new towns, scenery, and castles. A couple options I was considering:

1 night Kromeriz, 2 nights Cesky Krumlov
2 nights Olomouc, 1 night Telc or Trebon or Jindrichuv Hradec
.....or some mish-mash of the above

One of the things I'm running into is that this would be Sat/Sun/Mon nights, and it seems that a lot of attractions are closed on Monday. I'm totally fine having Monday be a more low key wandering-the-towns day, but are one of the above towns a better option for that? I'm hesitant about Cesky Krumov in August, but on the flipsdie would Monday be more likely to be less crowded since the castle* is closed, or is that just wishful thinking?? We'll have kids in tow so I was also wondering if CK might have a bit more to keep them occupied since it's slightly bigger and there are potential river activities. Would any of Telc/Trebon/Jindrichuv Hradec be more worthwhile for a second night? Open to other suggestions too!

  • as an aside, does anyone know if the CK castle grounds and tower are open on Mondays? I've seen references to this but couldn't find anything definitive on the website.

Hey! You can definitely do things in Český Krumlov on Monday. Some parts of the castle are still open - the garden and the stables. (info here: https://www.zamek-ceskykrumlov.cz/en/plan-your-visit/opening-hours)

Staying overnight in Český Krumlov is a great idea, most crowds there are made up of day trippers so it gets especially pleasant in the evening. Otherwise the old part of Český Krumlov is not that big but yes, there are the water activities. It's also not far from České Budějovice and two unique castles: Hluboká (open on Mondays in Aug) and Červená Lhota (closed on Mondays). Both are very worth visiting!

Otherwise Kroměříž is pretty, especially the gardens, and I have a soft spot for Olomouc. 😃 Olomouc is the biggest of the mentioned places, lots of things to see and do. But the main attraction - the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column - is under reconstruction until the end of the year.

Telč is super pretty too, I liked Jindřichův Hradec a lot and don't remember Třeboň (I only visited as a kid).

So... I don't know. There are lots of ways to go about this! The Mondays are not so dead but yes, castles and museums tend to be closed.

Do let me know if you have any more questions, I'm Czech and live in the country. 😊

Hi Laura, if you are still looking for things to do in southern Czech Republic, maybe I can help. I'm a local guide, and I also work with the Castle for 30 plus years now. I'm originally from Florida, but I've been living in the Czech Republic since 1993. All state castles and museums are closed on Mondays as a rule, but if you make arrangements enough in advance, usually there's a way to get in.

one night in Cesky Krumlov is sufficient if you need to make adjustments. Include the 10am. Baroque tour/ English. Find the Gypsy Bar for musice, Papas Living Restaurant

Telc is very small..

I like the town of Trebon!! I 've spent two weekends there. It is known for fish farming.. there are 2 nicer sit down restaurrants-one is a Michelen mention (De Martie) . I prefer the mom/ pop place it town for 'fish fingers' and potato salad. Called Bistro U Kapra.. small place with outdoor tables to chat, have a beer.. Try the malina (raspberry) lemonade

Also, enjoy the lake. Visit the Schwarzenberg family crypt.
