3-4 days in Prague - need advice!

I'm arriving in Prague around 5pm on August 11th and will be leaving around 3pm on the 15th.

1) I'm looking for some any advice on setting up an itinerary, so suggestions are welcome
2) is the Prague Card worth it? It seems pretty pricey to be honest but since I'm staying for a while I'm wondering if it would be good value
3) Thoughts on getting a 3-day transit pass? My hostel will be a bit out of the city centre so I'll probably be using it more than people who stay more centrally, but it also wouldn't cover the entirety of my stay. Also if I get one, do I need to validate it everytime I use it or just once?

Thanks

I didn't use the Prague Card, but as with any such card, you have to do the math yourself. Add up the costs of the things you'll see for sure, and compare it to the card's cost. When I did this, it wasn't a good deal for me, but this was in 2007, so things may have changed.

For me and transit, Prague was like Venice, in that I both walked a lot and took transit a lot. So the transit pass was a great deal. If your hostel is not in the center, it's a no-brainer to have a transit pass for each day of your stay. Since you'll need 4 days of coverage, see if a 7 day pass is cheaper than a 3 day plus a 1 day pass. You validate the pass at the time of first use; you then stash it away. You only need to show it again if an inspector asks to see it.

1) I cannot outdo Rick Steves. Excellent suggestions are in his book: Prague & the Czech Republic.
2) For me not but I am picky with museums and mostly prefer soaking in general ambience of the town, walks and views.
3) 3 day transit pass will be worth it especially because you are not staying in the center. For those two remaining parts of day do the mathematics: if you plan to do at least four rides in the beginning or ending day get 24 hour pass for that day. Otherwise point to point will be more economical. You validate pass first time you enter metro, tram, bus or trolleybus. Then the date and time is already printed there so inspector can check if it's still valid.

I think the advice here is good. For most people, all the major sites can be seen in a two day period. If you wanted to take your time you could stretch it out to three days. You may have time to do a day trip as well. Kutna Hora, Terezin, or Karstjien Castle are all good day trips from Prague. I hope this helps some.

We used the RS Prague guide for lodging recommendations and touring. Staying a short walk from the Clock and Charles Bridge put us a short walk from everything we wanted to see so forget the transit pass. St Vitus was about 2 Km away and uphill but a scenic half hour walk away from old town. So you really only need transit to from the hostel.

Hi,
It all depends on what you are looking for. I am trying to avoid tourism zones. There is a really nice book of back alley, great architecture, and cemetery walks. Praguewalks (Henry Holt Walks Series): Ivana Edwards ...
is the name, publisher, and author.

Does take you through the tourist must see areas, but also takes you places you would have missed even if you had a few weeks. They are well hidden.

Kelly,

  1. you may say what you likes are so others can get an idea on where you may want to go/do/see things.

  2. you should always do the math when it comes to any of the city cards. "Worth it" means different things to different people. I didnt buy one since it didnt pencil out for me. You can use a spreadsheet to tally up the savings and you can go to the website to see what attractions you will save and ones you won't. again, excel spreadsheets make it easy.

  3. If you need to get into/outof the city, a pass would be a good deal unless you plan on hoofing it everywhere. But thats up to you. I used the subway and trams a lot since things were more spread out and i wanted to save some energy for other days and places. The mulitday pass i got i just needed to validate it once. If the pass won't cover all of your stay, you can get a day pass to. it all depends on how much you're willing to spend or not. hoof it or spend a few Korunas.

happy trails.

If you want to tour the Jewish quarter, do it before Friday - most (all?) the ticketed sights close around 1 p.m. on Friday and are closed all day Saturday. I took a local bus to Terezin for a day trip and was fascinated. I started at the fort, then walked about 1 km. into town, partly along the town wall.
