I am a first time solo traveller. I have booked flexible accommodation (hostes) but need help planning realistic itinerary. I fly into Prague, (6-8 days?) then train (?) To Vienna (7 days?) Then train to Budapest (5 days?). Then I need to make my way towards Amsterdam within 11 days to depart back to Australia. I love history, art, walking, nature. Is Rothenberg worth an overnight stay? Any suggestions gratefully recieved.
You might consider a stopover in Cesky Krumlov during your journey from Prague to Vienna. We stayed 2 nights and it was just right. With the rural setting, it's a nice change of pace from the larger cities. We used the transfer service CK Shuttle for both Prague to Cesky Krumlov and then on to Vienna - train may also be an option.
At this stage of your planning all I can offer is my opinion on how much time you can spend in a few of the stops without wasting your time.
Prague 3 full days minimum, 4 days maximum.
Shuttle to Cesky Krumlov 2 full days
Shuttle to Vienna 4 full days minimum, 7 days maximum (7 gives you time for a few day trips, maybe an overnight someplace. Plenty to see outside of Vienna)
Train to Budapest 4 full days minimum, 9 days maximum (9 gives you time for a few day trips, maybe an overnight someplace. Plenty to see and do outside of Budapest)
I had very good hostel experiences at Wombat's City Hostel Vienna Naschmarkt and
Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Vondelpark. OK experience at MeetMe23 in Prague. All with women's only rooms. All convenient to public transit or walking distance to tourist zones, near groceries.
Wombat has full kitchen for your use. Stayokay and MeetMe2 have a space to bring your own food in. Stayokay has the biggest inside resturant. Wombat the biggest bar.
Fyi, opinons are from a 66 year-old male.
Budapest to Amsterdam is a long trip. I would consider stopovers in Regensburg or Bamberg, and then either Stuttgart or Frankfurt.
Great advice, thank you. I hadn't heard of Cesky Kromlov before. It sounds like a perfect place to spend an overnight stay...that castle looks spectacular! I will also work on fitting in Rothenburg possibly on the trip from Budapest to Amsterdam. Are there any hidden gems along that route? Neglected to say that I'm 63 and appreciate advice on hostels that don't have a hidden party plan, while I do love meeting people etc, sadly my energy levels tend to drain after 10!
If I understand, you have 11 days to get from Budapest to Amsterdam. Included in that time is seeing Amsterdam as well.
I think you have two primary options. One is to travel towards Berlin and northwest Germany. Spending time in Berlin and Hamburg. This will take you back through Prague. Two is to travel west towards Munich via Vienna, then turn northwest to get to Amsterdam. On this route you could stop in Salzburg, Munich, or Cologne.
Would you consider a night train for either of these options. Sleeping on the train gets you a day back for being a tourist.
