Zagreb vs Ljubljana

I have to choose between Zagreb or Ljubljana for my final day or two in Croatia or Slovenia. (I need to fly out from one them to Amsterdam for my flight home.)

I am looking for any thoughts or input on choosing one over the other.

Loved em both, but Ljubljana more. Zagreb is usually the cheaper, more serviced airport if that’s a factor.

Both are nice, which to me means you can't make a wrong choice. Since you are
looking at this as a springboard to your flight, I'd allow the parameters that matter
to you for your flight ($, timing, etc), potentially be the deciding factor, along maybe
with hotels.

No question, Lubljana! Fantastic place, great food, gorgeous, walkable. Loved it.

I agree with kenko that if airfares are equal, I would choose Ljubljana! It's a gorgeous city with the river running through it and beautiful architecture. That's not to say that Zagreb isn't interesting; it is, and we enjoyed our stay in Zagreb very much. But if I had to choose one, I would choose Ljubljana.

I'm in Zagreb for a conference and visited Ljubljana for 2 nights before the conference. Would recommend that you visit Ljubljana if you must choose. The capital of Slovenia is lovely and clean with a pedestrian-friendly center. You will be charmed by the city which seems to have a slower pace. In contrast, Zagreb is a bustling city with excellent museums, but it has rough edges and lacks the instant "curb appeal" of Ljubljana.

I am interested what you mean by rough edges, considering Zagreb still recovers from the 2020 earthquake.

We liked Zagreb better of the two locations. Interesting small and large museums, hilly town center and generally more fun to explore. Ljubljana was too flat and boring to explore in the town center. If only one night your choice might be made based on ease of travel and best flight choices (times and costs).

Zagreb is a much bigger and livelier city. You need more than one day. One day is enough to see all of Ljubljana.

I’m currently in Zagreb after visiting Ljubljana and OMG, while Ljubljana is a lovely small city— the historic upper town of Zagreb is just amazing. I think Zagreb is on the verge of a renaissance that will place it in the not-so-distant future as an emerging urban center like Prague.

My advice is to see Zagreb now before the rest of the world discovers it.
