We will be travelling from Zagreb to Split at the end of Sept. with an overnight stay in Plitvice. We plan to get up early and tour the park in Plitvice and carry on to Split in the afternoon. I'm torn between renting car or taking buses. Buses are less convenient and take longer. If I rent a car I would rent from downtown Zagreb and probably drop off at Split airport. I've got quotes from 2 Car Rental companies via Rentalcars.com. Sixt and Last Minute Rental. I was surprised that Sixt requires a Security Deposit of 2600.00 Euros for this rental, which I thought is excessive. Last Minute wanted 950 Euros for same but I have never heard of this company. Just wanted to hear from anyone that has done similar journey and experience with rental cars in Croatia.
Sixt has a location in downtown Split, a mile or so away from the port/Riva area.
Seems like it would a rental of 2-3 days, maybe 4 at the most. Is the rate OK but
the security deposit the thing you're wondering about?
Most likely they will put a hold on your credit card for the amount of the deposit,
and if all is well at the return they will just remove it. Thus, more important is to
document the condition of the car when you receive it so there is no dispute as
to any issues the agent sees when you return the car.
If you review the sub-forum, I believe you will see positive recommendations for
smaller rental car companies that are Croatia-local. You may get better rates if
you check those agencies out. But I rented from Sixt and had no issues.
We did just that: Rented a car in Zagreb, and dropped it off in Split. But we also visited other places on that trip.
If you stay at one of the Plitvice hotels they will endorse your park ticket for a second visit. So we went first the afternoon we arrived, and then a second time the morning we left. Visiting the park in the early morning was lovely.
We have a rental car now and it was through Rentalcars.com and ended up being Carwiz. In the agreement email they added all the scratches on the car with pictures which they took when my husband picked up the car.
I would have to ask him about the hold on our CC when he gets back to the hotel.
We have also used Sixt a few times, they were fine and the drop off spot isn’t too far from Split’s main tourist area.
Thanks for your replies....I just wanted some reassurance Rental Car companies in Croatia were honest and easy to deal with. I was a bit shocked at a 2600 Euro Security deposit! In this case I will only have the car for two days as when I get to the Coast we will continue our trip on Ferries. I thought dropping car off at Split airport, as RS has suggested would save complicated driving in an unknown one way system in town.
WengenK: I also thought about visiting Plitvice Park over two days but we are staying at the Miric Inn which is just outside the park and don't think we can get an endorsement for visiting twice. Hopefully 4 hours or so in the morning is enough time.
Has anyone dealt with 'Last Minute' Rental cars? That seems to be the best quote I have at the moment.
