With only 6 full days in Croatia (flying into Split) in mid May where should we go and stay?

We are heading to Croatia from Italy and arriving (and leaving) in Split. We will be renting a car and were thinking maybe a home base would be good and take day trips? Suggestions on what to see and where to stay are appreciated! We love charming towns, history, beautiful scenery, good food and nature. We prefer to not stay in a big city.

What’s on your list so far? Do you have any interest in the islands?
It’s too early for swimming, so you could do a loop on the mainland (maybe take in one of the parks like Paklenica or Krka), then drop the car and do island day trips from Split or stay in neighboring Trogir. I’d also look at the Sibenik/Primosten area. Or head south and do white water rafting at Omis, hiking at Makarska. My trips were all later in the season and more island focused, but those are the places most often mentioned in central Dalmatia.

Look at a route like this, but with stops that interest you, from Split to Dubrovnik to Mostar to Split.

Stops could be nature (two interesting waterfalls on the route); or villages (only one on that route that interests me); or island towns (one sort of interests me) or vineyards (one comes to mind); ot olive Plantations (one comes to mind).

I was thinking about it last night. Here is an idea: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pMaAuXUAS8n8Uf9Q6

I have been on most of the route on one trip or another. The problem with renting the car is how much you will miss. I love wineries, well, you are driving, so I didn’t list any of them. There are several villages I have stopped at in the region, but I'll be danged if I remember the names. But they were among the best parts of the trips, including meeting and talking to the locals thanks to the driver/interpreter. You lose a lot of that driving yourself, BUT I know there a advantages too. So, it’s a tradeoff. If you change your mind I know a driver. Either way, it’s a great trip. You will have a lot of fun.

0 Arrive Split / Night in Split.

  • I wont recommend much in Split, just not a place that spoke to me.

1 Day in Split / Night in Split.

  • Do a tour.

2 Morning ferry to Korcula and then last Ferry to Dubrovnik / Night in Dubrovnik.

  • Don’t skimp, pay what it takes to stay inside of the walls.

3 Day in Dubrovnik / Night in Dubrovnik

  • Since you have so little time hire a guide for a few hours. I know a good one laid back, reasonable prices, good personality (Nera Pavlovic, +385 98 183 4365 WhatsApp, Phone, Text), [email protected]).

4 Rent a car in Dubrovnik / Night in Mostar

  • Drive the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) route through Ravno and Hutovo to the Kravica Waterfall in (BiH) and go swimming. If you drove slow and stopped a lot, then there are a few places to eat next to the waterfalls. Not the best Ćevapi in BiH, but acceptable.
  • Drive to Blagaj Tekija Sufi Monastery better restaurants here. Better Ćevapi but still not world class. Do the tour.
  • Drive to Mostar. Dont skimp on the hotel. You want deep in the center of things. Something like Hotel-Restaurant Kriva Ćuprija but there are others as good.

5 Day in Mostar / Night in Mostar

  • You would really benefit with a guide for a few hours.

6 Drive to Split / Night in Split

  • I would do a route through BiH because I know the scenery is good and there are some villages along the way that might be interesting to you. Probably on the coastal route too, but not what I know.
