We are a family of 4 and plan 5 nights in the Dubrovnik area in June. We will have a rental car (need parking). Where is a good place to stay for a relaxing vacation that is not isolated, but pleasant in and of itself, yet close enough to go into Dubrovnik easily (few minutes drive) but not be stuck in the hustle and bustle? We plan side trips to Kotor, Konavle, maybe a local island, but also want to see Dubrovnik. What about nearby towns: Cavtat? Lapad? etc.

Lapad is technically in Dubrovnik, although outside the city walls where all the hotels are. Cavtat is further south, laid back, and should be a good gateway to Kotor - I would say go with Cavtat.

I would recommend Cavtat too. Even though you have a rental car, you may do better using the bus or the water taxi to get from Cavtat to Dubrovnik. Although you will not be there in the peak season, parking for the Old Town is always difficult, and relatively expensive. Not having a car also means you can enjoy a cold beer without worrying!

Thanks for your replies. We were leaning toward Cavtat, but found a seemingly nice place with parking south of the old city on the way to Cavtat. Now we can visit both!
