We are planning a trip to Croatia next June/July. It's going to be for 4 to 6 nights depending on how the rest of our trip itinerary shakes out. For 3 of the nights, I'm trying to decide if it would be better to go to Vis or Korcula. I will be traveling with my husband and 2 daughters ages 6 and 7. Thank you in advance for your tips!
That's not a lot of time for Croatia, so one factor might be the ease of transportation to and from the island you choose. Where will you be before and after your island visit?
Hi! We will be coming from Northern Italy. My plan is to take a flight a from Venice or Milan to Split.
Thanks!
If you only have 4 nights (a crime to spend so little time in Croatia!), then you would best stick to the mainland unless you want to spend half your time there in transit.
You only have one flight option from either Venice or Milan to Split. From Split airport, which isn't the quickest to get through - allow 45 minutes minimum - you then need to transfer down to the port, which takes c an hour. Vis and Korcula are two of the islands that are about as far from Split as is possible to get by ferry, each taking c 2.5 hours. So you are looking at a door to door transfer time of c 8-10 hours depending on how long you have to wait for the ferry. In my book, this isn't worth it for only 3 nights there, particularly with two young children.
It's easier to get to Korcula from Dubrovnik, although this is still a long transfer. Brac would save c 1.5 hours on the ferry.
Agree that is a lot of travel for such a short trip. Have you considered Istria, which you could reach by boat from Venice? If Split it is, I thought Brac would be great for kids because of the shallow water at Zlatni rat beach. Even Hvar would be much quicker to reach, and you need not stay in Hvar town if that is not to your taste.
Would take the hydrofoil from Venice to Rovinj. They also opened a warterpark recently called Aquapark Istralandia (istralandia.hr). Vis is a small island where Tito's liberation army was based (for history buffs) and is the furthest from the mainland. Korcula is probably my favorite island, along with Krk up north, but is a long trip and a pain to get to. Also in istria is Porec and Pula.
Korcula and Vis are most beautiful islands in Croatia. Pick Korcula and by day trip go visit Mljet island with national park and monastery. You will love it!
