I made a pact with my boyfriend that I would not plan every day so that we can get a feel of a town and do something more spontaneous. While I appreciate spontaneity, I would like to have suggestions to pick from - so I ask, any offbeat or memorable experiences that you can suggest in Split or Rovinj for 2 adults? We will be in Split Aug 25-28 and Rovinj Aug 30-2. We like tours, watersports, food, wine, hiking and other outdoor experiences. Thanks for your help!
What other things are you planning on doing? And what other places are you planning on going?
I have not been to Rovinj, but I have read about a boat trip through the Limski canal:

From Rovinj you could visit Porec and/or Vrsac by public bus. Both are coastal towns, but Vrsac is a small place up on a hill, not overrun by tourists despite being picturesque. Porec is much larger and has very colorful buildings, so it's quite different from the Rovinj old quarter. Expect Porec to be full of tourists, but I thought it was worth the trip. I didn't get to Pula, but it's another possible day-trip. Finally, if you hit the right day of the week, there's probably still a one-day bus tour to inland Istria (the key stops for me being Motovun and Groznjan). I had to stop in at three different Rovinj travel agencies to uncover it, so I'd suggest Googling in advance so you know how to book the trip if you decide to take it. Of course, if you're renting a car, you could drive to any of these places.
I agree that from Rovinj, Motovun and Groznjan are worth a stop. A bit farther north is Piran, Slovenia which is a nice town.
Near Split, check out Trogir.
