We will be in Rovinj for a few days this November and I'm intrigued with the idea of truffle hunting followed by a meal using said truffles. Anyody have recommendations for a good group to go with?
I don't, but Oprah does - https://www.oprahdaily.com/life/a65541843/oprah-essay-tina-turner-truffles/
But as she is talking about Italy, I can share that Zigante is probably the most famous purveyor of truffles in Istria - https://zigantetartufi.com/pages/truffle-hunting
We’re going to Croatia next month and booked a truffle hunt with https://miro-tartufi.com/en/truffle-hunting/, having read a story about them in our local paper last year. They’re even arranging transportation for us from Opatija since we won’t have a car. Will post afterwards with a review
Sybs- we spent half a day with Miro Tartufi in Motovun and can’t recommend more highly. Within 5 minutes of walking in woods his dogs started digging and within 20 minutes had found half dozen ping pong ball sized truffles. Back to his farmhouse for a spread of truffle snacks followed by truffled scrambled eggs topped with the freshly cleaned truffles we had just found. Dirt-to-table in under 2 hours! Lovely people and amazing setting at the foot of the walled city of Motovun.
That sounds absolutely lovely and so much fun! Please let us all know on the forum how it goes if you decided to do this! How fun!
Hello All,
My hubby and I have been trying to book a trip of Northern Croatia and possibly Slovenia with OAT travel or possibly self guided travel.
We have family in Preko, so we've been around all the sites from Zadar and south but we know nothing about the northern parts of Croatia. Our definite areas of interest are definitely Plitvice Falls and Zadar. I've been a fan of the TV series Hotel Portofino, so would also love to visit the areas in Croatia where it's filmed, which I believe is in Opatija, Rovinj, towns in Istria?
Would love some input on the following, traveling for 2-3 weeks
1) Driving in the Northern part of Croatia and possibly Slovenia? We've had experience driving in the Central and south and the highways are great! Does it make sense to fly in and out of Zagreb and rent a car from there?
2) Opinions about Istrian villages, Rovinj and Opatija.
3) A good place to home base in those areas
3) A good place to home base in Slovenia, and must see places to visit?
Thanks!
Joy
Joy you should start a new thread so your question does not get lost buried in this thread.
I also watched Hotel Portofino and immediately recognized those shores as Croatian! I stayed in Opatija years ago en route to the islands, but I’ve read here repeatedly that it’s pretty crowded these days—definitely not a village—and so you might consider neighboring Lovran, which was lovely. Walking the lungomare was nice.
Truffle hunting is an activity on the RS Village Italy tour. It was a rainy day so instead of going on a hunt, the owner buried some truffles in the yard for the dog to find - lol.
