Trogir or Split? Korcula time?

So I have a few questions for our upcoming trip to Croatia this summer with my family (keep in mind I'll have two young children with me- ages 5 &7).
We are planning to stop off in Split on our way up from Korcula to Plitvice, mainly to pick up a rental car.
My first question is: Should we stay the night in Split or is Trogir a better option for a night?

Secondly, We had planned on spending 3 nights in Korcula, but now i'm wondering if we really need 3 nights there. I wonder if we spend one less day there, that would give us one extra day somewhere else (like Slovenia).

My second question is: Is 3 nights in Korcula too long? Keep in mind we have 2 young kids and so we don't want to be moving too quickly from city to city.

Thanks!

I think 2 nights in Korcula is sufficient, but it probably depends on what you like to do. It's delightful, but there's not a lot to see and do there to keep you busy, and since you won't have a car, so unless you are planning to enjoy quiet relaxing time, I'd cut it back to 2 nights.

When you say you could add it somewhere else, I assume you are already planning on spending some time in Slovenia and this would give you an additional day there. I hope you aren't thinking this extra day would allow you to add another country!

As for whether to stay the night in Split or Trogir, I think with young kids Trogir would be a better option. The historic old town is a maze of narrow alleys where you can enjoy getting lost. But if it's not too much effort, you might want to take a few hours to see Diocletian's Palace in Split before you pick up your rental car and drive the half-hour drive to Trogir.

Whether 3 nights is too many or too few may also depend on the arrival and departure times. When I visited Korcula years ago as a stop between Dubrovnik and Split, I had to take a bus to Korcula (no ferry option that October), and that didn't get me into Korcula until early evening. I stayed two nights, but I had to leave at 6AM after the second night, because the catamaran to Split departed that early.

So for me, two nights was barely a single day in Korcula. Had I arrived early the first day or been able to leave later the last day, that would have made it feel longer.

But if you do stop going north between Split and Plitvice, keep in mind that there are worth stops in Croatia, in between, like Sibenik, Krka National Park, and Zadar. Slovenia is great if you already have time there and want to add another night - could make sense too.

Trogir is much smaller than Split and in my view more charming than Split...but also less interesting in many ways. If you could go directly from Korcula to Trogir (I don't think you can?) instead of Split, then maybe I'd say Trogir instead. But if you have to go from Split to Trogir, I'd probably just stay in Split and day trip by boat to Trogir or something. Less hassle with luggage etc. I don't think choosing one over the other is really that crucial of a choice.

Many places on the islands have a 3 night minimum stay - with 3 nights, this will give you sufficient time to have a look round. With children those ages, try not to move on too much.

Split is a larger city than Trogir - both have old buildings and are characterful. Trogir is a walled town and a bit more of a tourist trap, but is a good location if you are heading west. Both are pleasant locations for a day. Trogir is more compact and has narrow alleyways.

We had a two night stay on Korcula and felt it was sufficient. We arrived early (first ferry out of Split) and wandered the town that day. The next day we took a tour with Korkyra Tours and saw the whole island. Great tour. Not enought to do for a third day, IMO.

Thanks all for your input. Gosh, now I'm wondering if Korcula is even the best place for us. From what I've read, it doesn't sound like the best island for beach/swimming time. With our two young kiddos, we really just want a fun little island to spend a few days at that has good swimming beaches for the kiddos and some nice town atmosphere.
