Trogir or Krka National Park for day trip

We have time for one day trip from Split in May and I'm looking at either Trogir or Krka NP. We will have already been to Plitvice NP earlier on this trip.

Some of what I'm seeing says Trogir is very touristy and crowded, but the description also sounds lovely and worth exploring. Is it more than just walking around the city?

Krka looks beautiful. Is it very different from Plitvice and will we want to do both on this trip?

Looking for opinions. Thanks!

Please share the entire itinerary. What islands will you be visiting?
I have been to Plitvice but not Krka. One difference is that at Krka you can swim.
Trogir could be a half day, but Krka likely a full day with transport.

With so little time in Split, I don't think it would be any kind of tragedy to not do a day trip, but since you do not have any island time planned, a hop over to one of the ones off Split (Hvar, Brac, Solta) would be nice. See catamaran schedules on the Krilo or Jadrolinija websites.
Trogir is a cute little place, but very small. I think I'd want to get out on the water, and late May is usually fine weather. You may be able to take a ferry to Trogir, but I have not verified ferry schedule.

Also, have you scoped out transport--just wondering about the Ljubljana to Opatija to Plitvice travel--or are you dropping a car in Split or ?

We're on a tour so covered for transportation. I think the only time we're getting out on the water is in Opatija and I was just reading about Hvar. Maybe that would be a better way to go. Thanks, I'll look more at that option!

They sell one day bus trips to both Krka and Trogir, We booked the day before. It was a nice afternoon.
But, if you are going to Plitvice, a trip to Krka isn’t necessary unless you really love lakes. Trogir is a cute, small city but you wouldn’t be missing much.

I'm back to this again. Thanks for the encouragement that it's okay to skip Krka since we're doing Plitvice, and might be better to visit islands. I'm looking at the sites for catamaran trips to Hvar. My question now is if that is something we can pick up on the day of or the day before, or if I should make reservations for that now. I'd kind of like to leave the timing open if it's something we don't have to buy in advance.

I would not do it months in advance, but May can be a bit busy, so I would scope out the ticket office on the day you arrive in Split and check the forecast, purchase a day or two before.

I agree with Barbara. If you are going to Plitvice, you do not need to do Krka. We have done both, on two separate trips, and were disappointed with Krka. In our eyes it just did not compare to Plitvice. You do not list your ages or interests, but if you like adventure, we did a ziplining daytrip from Split that was a lot of fun.

There are 4-6 daily ferries during May and summer that travel between Split’s Ferry Port and Trogir. The company running route 616 to Trogir is called “Bura Line.” Tickets are €7 and the journey takes one hour.

Have a great trip!

Not sure what mode of transit you’ll be using but the fastest route from Plitvice Lakes National Park to Split ( 3 hours) on the A1 Highway goes through Sibenik—- a very interesting Croatian town which happens to be just 15 minutes away from Krka National Park.
Have a great trip!
