Travel to the Balkans

Needing advice on traveling to Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina in April-May 2022. All our cancellation free reservations for rental car and lodging have been made for a three and a half week trip. We've cancelled three previous trips due to Covid and are anxious to visit . With events in Ukraine is it wise for us to make the trip? What are others thinking?

Personally, I'd love to go back now - maybe I'll be able to in the spring. I am on a Slovenian expats FB group, and I see a lot of talk of locals taking in Ukrainian refuges there, but otherwise I would not expect much disruption in this region due to the conflict. Of course, a war like this makes things uncertain all over the world. There are a number of other threads on the topic in the other RS forums if you want to read others' perspectives on travel to Europe right now.

If I had any trips booked for that part of the world (which I don’t), other than trips to Russia and Ukraine, I would still go. Ukraine is 1,000 miles from where you will be visiting.

By all means go ahead with your trip as planned. After canceling so many times due to Covid, it’s not just a vacation- it’s a way to finally get to do something worthwhile and long in the planning that will likely make you feel like life is (mostly) returning to the way it was before two years ago.

Actually border to border the distance is 300 to 450 miles depending on Ukraine and which of the countries you listed.

My trip later this month was to be Budapest and Kyiv. Now I am looking at Budapest and Bosnia & Herzegovina. I have been every place on your list, except Slovenia, a few times and its a wonderful corner of the world. I would do Bosnia & Herzegovina for sure because the Russians are toying around there too and the opportunity to visit might not be there in the future.

The only advice I would give you is do your homework on travel within the region. The tourist infrastructure isn't that good. If you need help let me know. I know a pretty good travel agency in Montenegro that can take care of your needs for transportation, things to see and do, hotels, and guides if you want, across the region.

My husband is going to Croatia May 5 and myself and another couple will meet him there June 15 for the rest of the month. Cancelling hasn’t even come up as a subject.
