Travel to Croatia for Best of Adriatic Tour in September

We have been looking at various flights to arrive at Ljubljana and depart from Dubrovnik. Best price for a one stop from Washington DC look to be on Turkish Air through Istanbul. We flew Turkish Air for the Best of Turkey tour and loved the airline. But it seems like a lot of extra flying time. What have your strategies been? We know whatever it is we only want one stop either way.

I've read about using Zagreb as the destination / departure airport and taking a train to Ljubljana and from Dubrovnik.
I've read about taking a day layover in a central European city (like London or Paris) and then taking a direct flight the next day.
Your comments / suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Flights from the West Coast are a lot longer, but I’m doing that tour soon. My flight was to London (taking time in England) and then flying East Jet to Ljubljana. I’m flying back from Dubrovnik to Amsterdam on Easy Jet. After a night in Leiden, I’m flying the rest of the way back home on Delta.

There’s the extra time, the extra expense of additional nights at a hotel, and waiting time going through airport security to consider.

Don't just look at tge flight path, look at total trip time. Depending on your layover Istanbul may or may not be much different. And I will easily choose an extra hour for Turkish Aur and IST. Just a sweet combo.

Also at the start and end of tge tour consider using Zadar and Podgirica as both have discount airline connections. Budapest for instance. And a few days in Montenegro, to use Podgirica, is worth the time.

We are taking the same tour in October. This was a “you can’t get there from here” situation from Dulles, but we ended up booking with United. We are connecting in Zurich to Ljubljana and Frankfurt from Dubrovnik. For now at least, the trans-Atlantic flights seem to be United and not a codeshare with Lufthansa. Plenty of time for things to change.

Just use kayak or google flights for a multi city search. Plug in Ljubljana and Dubrovnik as your arrival and departure airports.

But Emily, that would ignore several adjacent options.

Okay this is a perfect Lemonade trip. That is leverage the trip to see more. Its how I discovered some of my favorite places. There are countless options. But here is my stab at it if you have the time and the budget.

Washington D.C. to Istanbul non-stop. Three or four nights in Istanbul. Wonderful place for a few days. Same Turkish Air ticket on to Ljubljana. Now that trip through Istanbul isn’t out of the way.

Dubrovnik drive through Montenegro for two to four nights, ending in Podgorica. You won’t regret the time in Montenegro and I know a company that can make all the arrangements for the trip.

Podgorica non-stop to Budapest on Wizz Air. Three or four nights in Budapest then Turkish Air to Istanbul to change flights and home (same Turkish Air ticket – Open Jaw).

Pretty good cross section of the region; one ticket except the quick Wizz Air Flight. Compared to the cost of a RS tour, Montenegro and Budapest are pocket change.

Also look at arrival in Zagreb and look at departures from Dubrovnik and Sarajevo to explore more options.

We are taking this tour in September too. We are flying from MSP (Minneapolis-St Paul) to Paris, on Delta. Have about a 4 hour layover and then to Lubllijana, on Air France (though booked through Delta as Air France is one of their partners). That seemed simple enough for us. On the way home it's more complicated. We fly from Dubrovnik to Zagreb on Croatia Airlines. Then we fly to AMS on KLM. We are staying in AMS for a few nights because, we want to, and because we couldn't get out that same day anyway. So, we decided to enjoy AMS and then fly directly to MSP a few days later, on Delta.

Happy Travels!!! Maybe we are on the same tour!!!

We are on this tour right now. Flew non stop to Venice, then took a Go Opti driving transfer to Ljubljana. Worked perfectly-- stepped out of the airport, walked about 150 metres and there was our driver. Took less than 3 hours, which included two stops for others in the van, and dropped us off right in front of hotel.

I figure by the time you manage to transfer planes, then make your way from Ljubljana Airport to hotel, it was quicker. Definitely easy. And cheaper than any connecting flight i could find.
