Travel Solutions in and around Split, Makarska, Hvar, Korcula & Dubrovnik

We're a family with children 8 and 11. We love nature and sightseeing. I don't know how many museums etc kids will be able to handle before they get bored, but we definitely want to visit some of the most important landmarks.

We are staying 2 nights in Zadar, then 2 nights in Sibenik before we drive to Split 3 .
- Is it recommended to visit (or not to visit) Krka National Park on route if we're already visiting Plitvice NP? Why?
- From Zadar visit Kornati National Park and/or Dugi Otok & Pag Islands - should we do both and should we do it on our own or take a tour?
- From Sibenik perhaps visit Sibenik Archepeligo. Should we use boat taxi, tour, pvt skipper or ferry?
- Are we doing too much?

Our itinerary makes for 3 nights in Split, then another 3 nights in Dubrovnik.
- Do you recommend we drive from Split to Dubrovnik by passing through Makarska
OR
- rather take the catamaran from Split to enjoy the coastline to Hvar and/or Korcula before stopping in Dubrovnik
OR
drive to Makarska, get onto a car ferry, night over on one of the islands before getting to Dubrovnik?

If we night over on one of the islands we will have 2 nights in Split.
- Should we night over in Hvar or Korcula? Provide best location to stay..
- Will we have time to visit both islands if we night over in one?
- What do we regarding luggage? Do we take the car on ferry from one island to the other and lose the car in Dubrovnik,or lose the car in Split or Maraska?

Thanking you in advance

As I understand, you’re visiting Plitvice as a day trip? It can be a notoriously crowded as a daytrip, and the general recommendation is to spend a night there. Krka is usually suggested as kind of a “poor man’s Plitvice” not as spectacular, but smaller and more convenient to the coast and as a day trip. Krka is viewed as a bit redundant then if you’re visiting Plitvice.

I would probably cut Split to two nights regardless. Take that night and use it for Plitvice, spend a night on Korcula, or even just make it 4 nights in Dubrovnik. Unless you have specific plans for Split, two nights seems about right for most folks. Ditch the car in Split and go the rest of the way via the catamaran. They’re far more convenient, comfortable and hey, kids love boats.

If you’re inclined, a night in Korcula would work as an overnight stop though I’d prefer two nights. Korcula has a cool old town and views the kids might appreciate. I’d recommend a quick trip out to Badija island where docile deer meet you at the dock. But, I think I’d go 4 nights in Dubrovnik. From a kids’ perspective, Dubrovnik might be the coolest. There’s an incredible amount of activity options and excursions from here, you won’t have trouble filling that time. One caveat, if you’re there in high season you and kids might just be more hot, tired and miserable than anything.

Thank you for your input so far.

The forum has advised to stay over in Korcula 2 nights.
with 10x nights to work with, I need help to decide how to split (excuse the pun) the days for maximum benefit.

Which of the following plans do you recommend?

-Zadar 2 nights | Sibenik 2 nights | Split 3 nights | and Dubrovnik 3 nights.

OR

  • Zadar 2 nights | Sibenik 2 nights | Split 2 nights | Korcula 1 night | Dubrovnik 3 nights - fly out day 4

OR

  • Zadar 2 nights | Sibenik 1 night | Split 2 nights | Korcula 2 nights | Dubrovnik 3 nights - fly out day 4

Thank you

Could you merge the Zadar/SIbenik stays? They are only an hour apart, but in that case you might need to decide if you want Kornati or Dugi Otok (I have bot been to either).
I would not go to an island for anything less than two nights.
