We will be arriving by train from Zagreb the day the tour starts. Any advice on how best to get to the hotel for the start of the tour from the station instead of the airport?

Check to see how far the hotel is from the train station. You could either walk or take a taxi.

A taxi will be easiest.

You can go with Uber, Cammeo or other taxi services such as Taxi Laguna or Taxi Ljubljana.
