My husband and I would like the fastest way to get from Venice to Zagreb, Croatia this October. We do not wish to take a night train, so hopefully something early morning, by bus or train. Any ideas?
That's a route that's better done by bus because the train takes quite a while. Here's a link to some bus information - it looks like it takes about 4.5 hours. http://www.buscroatia.com/routes-search/?dSn=Venice+%28IT%29&aSn=Zagreb+%28HR%29&d=08%2F29%2F2016&dS=1627&aS=1510
I don't see any nonstop flights. Some cities are just hard to connect, even though they're not that far apart.
There is no direct train service between Venice and Zagreb, so part of your trip will need to be by bus. You can either take the train to Trieste and switch to a bus there, or you an take a bus for the entire distance.
I'm not sure the bus mentioned in the previous response runs daily, especially in October, so I suggest further investigation. Don't wait till the day of the trip to buy a ticket for a trip like this. Border-crossing buses do sometimes sell out. On the plus side, there may be more options than we're finding via internet searches. More information may be available once you're actually in Venice (or Venice-Mestre).
There IS a way to get to Zagreb entirely by train, if you count trams as trains, that is. The Man in Seat 61 has the instructions on how to go about doing it: http://www.seat61.com/venice-to-ljubljana-and-zagreb-by-train.htm
Otherwise, a bus or shuttle transfer is your best option.
