In September my husband and I will travel to Croatia and Slovenia. We will rent a car in Dubrovnik and stay in different areas along the coast heading toward Slovenia. I need to find a town close to the border that has train (or bus) service to Ljubljana, Slovenia, as well as a car rental return center.
Please help if anyone has info on this. Thanks
Either Rijeka or Zagreb have direct noontime trains to Ljulbjana that take 2.5 hours. Were either of these already on the plan to visit? Zagreb has more train departures, but not all direct.
https://getbybus.com/en/ can be useful to find bus service. Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it.
Going the other direction, I've taken the train from Ljubljana to both Zagreb and Rijeka on separate trips to pick up cars. I spent a few nights in Zagreb on the first trip before picking up the car (so didn't have to pick it up at the train station - I picked it up at a hotel), but I picked up my car in Rijeka immediately upon arrival. I used EconomyCarRentals for the Rijeka car, and they used a Croatian company called Oryx. The Oryx office was about a 15-20 minute walk from the station down to the harbor area, but I am used to walking with a little bag like that. With two people, one can drop the other with bags off at the tiny Rijeka train station, drop the car, then either walk back or take a local bus (or a taxi) or ask the car company to drop you back there. Not all the rental car companies in Rijeka seem to be in exactly the same spot so I can't say exactly how far it might be to get from there back to the station.
Zagreb might have a few more train options plus buses too back to Ljubljana.
Thanks for the info. We will not be in Zagreb but leaving via rental car from Rovinj to get to Ljubljana. That is why I need a train departure area that also has a car rental/return depot. It sounds like both are in Rijeka. I will also try to find an schedule online for train schedules.
Here ya go:

If you don't mind a bus, there is also a direct bus from Rovinj at least once a day I believe. I could have done this, but I hate long bus rides and love trains, so I opted for the hour or so drive from Rijeka to Rovinj instead. (See, I really was going in the opposite direction as you will be!)
I did take the bus from Slovenia to Rovinj in 2015. It was fine. But I don't mind buses. I actually like being able to wheel my suitcase to the side of the bus and stash it in the hold rather than having to maneuver it onto a train and hope for a place to put it.
Thanks for info. If we can drop our rental car off in Rovinj the bus would definitely be more convenient. Now I'll start looking around to find out the bus company and schedule.
