Train service from Zagreb to Ljubljana

I was about to hire a car service for this journey because Google Maps doesn't seem to know anything about train travel between these cities.

Then I read Rick's book and see that there are three trains per day running about 2 1/2 hours.

My problem is that I can't find a Croatian or Slovenian website that looks official that shows the trains, let alone one that allows me to book it.

On bahn.de I do see that there are trains but I haven't clicked all the way throgh to see if I can buy them.

  1. How can I find a schedule of train service that I can know to be accurate?
  2. How can I purchase the tickets before I get there?
  3. What are the main train stations in Zagreb and Ljubljana?

Thanks for any info you can share!

Yes, it is English. Bravo.

I saw that previously and there is no destination for Ljubljana. When I enter Ljubljana, there is a message that says 'Ljubljana ne postoji' which translates to "Ljubljana does not exist." I don't know if that is breaking news, or if that means this website isn't useful for making this booking. But I'm betting on Ljubljana still existing.

Took this train several years ago. You do not need tickets in advance, you can buy at the station, including in advance at the station.

Thanks to both. I have the times of the trains and understand that I don't need to buy in advance, especially (most likely) for mid-March. I can plan my days / times around this and get the tickets when we get on the ground.

We took the train from Zagreb to Ljubljana in 2019. You cannot buy the tickets online. We went to the train station the day before we planned on going to Ljubljana and purchased them at that time. If you buy your tickets a day or two in advance, the price is cheaper. I believe the cost was $9.00 per ticket one-way. The train station is small and easy to navigate.

FWIW, based on my experiences with both bus and train between these two cities, I would recommend the bus. Flixbus was cheap, easy and comfortable. You can reserve ahead online. My train from Ljubljana to Zagreb was pretty rough, packed to the gills and hot.
