Tipping in Croatia

Cut out the pages we need for our trip and realized I didn't include general info. Arriving at O'hare airport. Info on tipping within the next 18 hours appreciated!

In Croatia, waiters and drivers are professionals, so tipping is not necessary. However, since most Americans are uncomfortable not tipping, most people are happy to take your money.

Here's some of what you left behind:

Restaurants: You don’t need to tip if you order your food at a counter. At restaurants that have a waitstaff, round up the bill 5-10 percent after a good meal. A 15 percent tip is overly generous, verging on extravagant. At some tourist-oriented restaurants, a 10 or 15 percent “service charge” may be added to your bill, in which case an additional tip is not necessary. If you’re not sure whether your bill includes the tip, just ask.

Taxis: For a typical ride, round up your fare about 5 percent (for instance, if the fare is 71 kn, pay 75 kn). If the cabbie hauls your bags and zips you to the airport to help you catch your flight, you might want to toss in a little more. But if you feel like you’re being driven in circles or otherwise ripped off, skip the tip.

Services: In general, if someone in the service industry does a super job for you, a small tip of a euro (or the local equivalent) is appropriate...but not required. If you’re not sure whether (or how much) to tip for a service, ask a local for advice.

You are exactly right. When I first went to Croatia, I was tipping wait staff at 20 percent and I got some startled reactions. Keep it down to 10 percent maximum and only then if they give good service. Tom Falater

If you want safe money, don't do it. If you will be coming back to the same place what I usually do.. leave good impression and leave the tips. In bars and restaurant, Other places no.. In general where ever you leave the tips is super good for your and his ego.

In bars you can leave coins or change like 10, 20 kn. Same in restaurants. If you are bigger groupe up to you or main guy who is in charge. for paying taxi usually you don't take change back. To be honest taxi guys not deserve tips.. but they always play middle man role :). Accommodation hosts dint get use to take tips. If you want to do it, than do it with 100Kn and more.. Or send him your friends to stay at his place.

Ps I need to tell you as I am Croatian, when you give big tips they will talk about you for long time. Call it as positive karma.

Have a good time,

Don't forget to visit Korcula Island and Plitvice Lakes!
