We recently purchased tickets on the ferry to Dubrovnik and within three weeks we had four charges on our credit card for Experian for four credit checks, including ours. The card has a chip in it and the lady on the phone from Visa immediately canceled our card suggested that there is a lot o hanky-panky with using cards over seas. We told her we were in the states making these reservations. We also have made reservations on several airlines in Italy, Sicily and Slovenia. She, the lady from Visa, said that there was no way they could have used our card unless they had the number on the back of our card. We have our cards in our possession and the only way they could have gotten the number is when we made our reservations on line. She also said that since we have Skype it could have been a breach in their system because they have seen some problems with them and we pay for that automatically with our Visa card.
So we are writing to see if anyone else has had problems like this and to give you a heads up on what may be potential problems.
We have traveled many times to Europe and used our card everywhere, this is the first time this has happened to us.
I can't help with the bad credit card charges, but I am very interested to know what season/month your ferry tickets are for? I am having a terrible time trying to find a ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik in January 2015. The main ferry line, Jadrolinija, doesn't run that route in the winter anymore, unfortunately.
