Things to do in Zagreb

My husband and I will be on RS Best of the Adriatic in late May and early June, and after the tour, we're flying to Zagreb for a couple of days before flying home. It was a good way to avoid two layovers on the trip home. I have a question for those who have been to Zagreb in the last couple of years. What are some of the best things to do and see in the city? As far as i can tell, a lot of the landmarks are closed for renovations, mostly related to the 2020 earthquake. The cathedral and St. Mark's Church are closed, as is the Mestrovic Atelier. The Museum of Naive Art is closed on weekends; unfortunately, we'll be there Saturday and Sunday, and we're leaving on Monday morning. It appears that the city is lovely as a place to walk around and enjoy the sites from outside, but I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

It's too bad that some of the places are still closed, such as the Museum of Naive Art that we really enjoyed.

Keep in mind that Zagreb has an Upper Town and Lower Town. They are both interesting to wander around. In the Lower Town, be sure to visit the very colorful Market (dolac). It's festive looking with lots of red umbrellas and cafes lining the market. Browse through the indoor fish market. There is a meat and cheese market underground.

Then go up to the Upper Town and wander through Gradec and Kaptol. These were separate medieval communities in the early days, and then merged to form Zagreb. There is interesting street art and graffiti. Walk down Tkalciceva Street, a lively pedestrianized street with lots of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Do you know if all the museums are closed? There is the Museum of Broken Relationships, which we didn't have time to visit, but is very popular. There are botanical gardens and Zagreb 360, a combined cafe and viewing deck.

Hope this helps.

Museum of Broken Relationships is terrific. Otherwise, Zagreb is just a really chill, interesting town to explore. Lots of little courtyards, nooks and what not. I found a cool neighborhood food truck hangout zone back behind the National Theater on Mažuranić square, fun on a summer evening. Some lovely buildings that way too. Those tours are kind of fast paced. Zagreb’s low-key charm ought to provide a nice recovery before you head home.
