Suggestions on airlines for flying from Oregon to Croatia

I don't do a lot of international travel, so seeking input on flying into Split, Croatia, then Dubrovnik to Rome, then Rome back home. Are some airlines better for flying in/out of Croatia? Also, I don't need to use the same airline for all flights. TIA

We don’t know what your home is :)
But whatever it is, the answer is always to see what the options are, then throw them out for us to offer input on. Try a multicity itinerary search on google flights.
If you have the extra time to break up the trip, you can fly to a large city that has direct service for hire, then switch to a low cost carrier, but let’s see what the whole shebang works out to first.

Since you're flying from the West Coast, look into Condor or Lufthansa. They often have solid connections through Frankfurt or Munich that get you into Split quite easily. Doing a multi-city search is definitely the way to go so you don't have to backtrack from Rome.

Use Google Flights and choose the multi-city option, e.g., from Portland to Split, then Rome to Portland.

You could do all this on KLM with one change in AMS.

Book Dubrovnik to Rome separately. Croatia Airlines and Ryanair fly this route.

We live in Bend. We rarely use PDX for international flights because there are many more options going out of Seattle or San Francisco and depending on the airline will probably be routed thru one of those cities anyway. I normally play around with SFO or SEA because I can always get an Alaska or United flight out of Bend to either. As someone else has already suggested, play around with Google flights using the multi city tab to see what’s available for your dates.

What ramblin' on 😎 said.

Unless you have a reason not to, keep the route flexible so you have more options to consider. Like Home to Dubrovnik (or even Podgorica) then Split to Rome.

We flew a couple years ago from Split to PDX, I booked through Delta, it was a KLM plane Split to Amsterdam and then Amsterdam to PDX on a delta plane. Now KLM flies the plane between Amsterdam and PDX- biggest complaint here is the seat configuration is now 3-3-3 instead of 2-4-2. We have also flown Condor airlines to Frankfurt and Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Rome and return, booked through condor website. We usually book one way tickets through different airlines to make landing in one city and leaving from another city doable. We also do multi city tickets if I can find one airline that works with both cities. I search through google flights and then try to find the flights on the airlines websites to book.

When are you going? Are you flying from PDX? For one stop options, these are the direct Europe flight airlines:

  • Condor flies to Frankfurt (seasonal)
  • KLM flies to Amsterdam (has been seasonal, does not fly every day of the week)
  • British Air flies to London
  • Icelandair flies to Reykjavik (seasonal, also not every day of the week)

Use Google flights to do a multi-city search and see what comes up. If you have flexibility in your schedule, adjust a day or two on either side as more options may appear due to limited flight schedule. As noted buy a separate flight from Dubrovnik to Rome or find other option.

Whatever you come up with, make sure your entire itinerary in one transatlantic direction
is on the same ticket. I.e., don't plan a intra-Europe or US flight to catch the transatlantic
flight on a different ticket unless you pad the connection by a day (or at least a lot of hours).

You will see this guideline many times interspersed in other entries like this. If your intra flight
is late and you miss your transatlantic flight, that will be on you and the transatlantic airline does
not have to do anything to help you. Which may mean you eat the first ticket and have to buy
a new one-way ticket at an outrageous price.
