suggestions for a good bonus day/night while enroute to croatia

hello all ... we are looking to travel to croatia in september. after much consideration, we decided not to add on another country to our itinerary and just focus on croatia. having said that, we thought, perhaps, if we flew into somewhere interesting, we may be able to get in a quickie visit to someplace special! suggestions? our son flew into frankfort, germany years ago but that isn't high on our list. thinking more along the lines of vienna or budapest ... thoughts? info on ease of travel from these cities to croatia. open to any suggestions!!! tia!

Where are you traveling from? Are you looking for options that don’t increase your number of flights? When I went to Slovenia/Croatia last year I spent time in the UK ahead of time and near Amsterdam at Leiden afterwards. I was flying Delta (to London/from Amsterdam) and used Easy Jet for the connections within Europe.

Easy Jet was a convenient airline. I did pay extra to have my larger backpack (Cotopaxi 35L) with me as a carry on inside the airplane.

The problem with Budspest is its a long train to Croatia. But Tues and Sat Wizz does fly direct to Podgorica and a tour up the coast and a night in Podgorica on the way to Dubrovnik would be a trip to remember. But that's at least 2 nights in Budapest and one night on Perast. Still a wild beautiful idea.

Consider this...Adding a "side-trip" that includes a flight means you will consume at a minimum 3 days: one day to fly somewhere, one day to actually be there (preferably longer), and another day flying back. When you count up the hours associated with changing locations and traveling by air, even a short, regional flight burns most of a day. Do you have 3+ days to burn? If so, great, look at...well, almost anyplace in Europe or near Europe (the difference in the length of the flight does not move the needle much or at all, so your side-trip could be anywhere from Iceland to Estonia, Morocco to Oman, or just over to the nearest city....if you're flying anywhere, there goes a whole day).

Don't want to spend 3+ precious days? You're going to visit Dubrovnik, no? Why not rent a car and do an easy day trip to Kotor, next door in Montenegro? We asked our B&B host if she knew anyone who wanted to rent a car for a day...she was "why, yes!" and it was all easy. Meet the car guy in the morning, sign some paperwork, off we went. Back by dinner time to hand back the keys. Kotor is a short, lovely drive, and a beautiful city (try to get there early in case a cruise ship pulls up right after you arrive...). While there is of course more to see beyond Kotor, the city makes a perfect, easy day trip from Dubrovnik if you want something close and quick.
