Staying in Split June 5-8. Stay in Old town or surrounding area?

We are driving up from Mostar to Split June 5th (sunday) and leaving June 8th for flight out from Zadar. We are outdoor lovers but also love local culture. Had planned on using Split as a base to explore at the tail end of our 2 week stay in Croatia.

Would love recommendation if we should stay in the Split old town or one of the surround areas and just visit split for the day? We will have a small rental car for transportation.

Thanks so much for the awesome advice!

I loved staying in the old town because it's all built within an old palace which is really unique. But no cars are allowed there (the driver dropped me off maybe a 5 min walk away from the plaza where my hotel was). If finding car parking is a consideration, I'm sure even if you stay a little bit outside the Diocletian's Palace area you'd still have a great time, although you'd have to walk a little bit. Split also has a more modern section with more high(er) rise/city feel right outside the old part. If you love outdoors and hiking, I'd recommend doing a little hike up Marjan hill right at the edge of town by the waterfront - wonderful views of Split from there. I also used Split to take the island ferries and spend a few nights in Brač. If you do want to really enjoy Split and perhaps islands for a few days, the car will likely sit idle (it won't be of any help). Perhaps you can drive to Trogir but that's an even smaller old quarter so you'd have to park outside of it.

hi Agnes,
Thanks for your advice! We dont mind parking and walking. Our biggest concern with staying in the palace is how long it would take us to get to our car for a day trip. say for example to the Krka national park.
