We are a couple in our mid 50s spending 4 nights in Split in late Sept. What part of town do you recommend staying in? We are most likely interested in an airbnb. We do not have car. Arriving from airport and leaving from ferry port to visit islands after our 4 night stay in Split.
I really enjoyed staying at a small hotel that was right in the city center, close to the beach, the ferries, and the buses, as well as a lot of good restaurants.
Would you mind sharing the name?
I wouldn’t mind if I could remember it. Unfortunately, I’m not one of those people who make travel notes about names of hotels or restaurants, and I think the reason why I don’t do that is because hotels and restaurants seem to change hands so often. And in this case, it wasn’t that the hotel was so remarkable, but just the location being close to all the action, which is what I was recommending instead of being away in an apartment somewhere.
I hope you have a great trip!
Last October, I stayed in Split at the Apartments Kaleta, which is near the back of the Diocletian's Palace but inside of it and on the same side as the ferry port (but in the back - see a map). The place was a little small but very practical - little dining table, little fridge, etc. Clean. And an AMAZING price for the location. I was quite satisfied with it - stayed an extra night there without a second thought.
Staying inside the palace area can be a bit noisy for sure (there was a little restaurant right outside my window, below - I was two floors up, but it wasn't an issue for me). It's most practical to stay inside the palace or very close to it if you can.
Andrew H - that sounds like the exact location where I stayed, but I looked it up and it doesn’t look the same but perhaps it changed hands. I don’t remember being bothered by too much noise, and there was a restaurant below.
Rachele, there are probably a few dozen places like that inside the palace. And the place I stayed was not a hotel at all - it was managed by a woman who had a few little small apartments on the same floor and she did not live there, though she was around to clean every day at a certain time. It was very much self-serve otherwise, but I'm used to that and it worked well for me.
Those kind of establishments often call themselves “hotels” even though they really aren’t.
