I will be ending a tour(Slovenia and northern Croatia)in Hvar with an included transfer on to Split on 9/27. Fly out of Dubrovnik very early 9/30.
I could take the ferry to Dubrovnik on 9/27, or stay another night in Hvar and ferry 9/28. I was also thinking about returning to Split with group and renting a car and driving to Mostar for the night of 9/27 and then on to Dubrovnik for 2 nights. I have read there is a cross border fee if I do go into Mostar with the rental car but I’m unsure as to what that would be, but not averse to paying to see that area.
I don’t have a lot of interest in beaches and enjoy seeing new areas, so thought that might be more interesting than another night in Hvar or more time in Dubrovnik.
Would appreciate any advice and thoughts. Thank you in advance.

You don't necessarily need to rent a car--there are buses from Split to Mostar and Mostar to Dubrovnik. If you do drive, then I would look into some other stops in Hercegovina.
If you go the island route, then Korcula would be an obvious stopover.
